Con

In over the 10 years that I have been in public schools, I have seen so many disturbing things and how little teachers have very small interest in their students. They practically babble about an off topic subject not even relating to what the class is actually suppose to be learning, then when it comes to the end for the students to test and see how well they learned over the years many students fail the test. I am in homeschooling and our school district shows statistically that reading/writing 100% students pass and math 97%.

Pro

Thanks to PRO for instigating.

But.... Is it PRO, or CON? The way I see it, your position states CON, where you oppose the resolution, but the following statement suggests otherwise:

"In over the 10 years that I have been in public schools, I have seen so many disturbing things and how little teachers have very small interest in their students. They practically babble about an off topic subject not even relating to what the class is actually suppose to be learning, then when it comes to the end for the students to test and see how well they learned over the years many students fail the test."

This shows you affirm the resolution that 'teachers get paid to stand and do nothing', but your last statement shows the following:

"I am in homeschooling and our school district shows statistically that reading/writing 100% students pass and math 97%."

That is confirming your position that you are opposed to the resolution, so we have a problem, I really do not know which position I need to argue for, so I'll just stick to the position I agreed to accept earlier, and since we are in a R1-only debate, this should be quick.

REBUTTAL

"....our school district shows statistically that reading/writing 100% students pass and math 97%."

This seems to be the only argument my opponent made as CON, but this is an unreliable statistic as it has no sources to support it, therefore her arguments are insufficient and inaccurate.

ARGUMENTS

Now for my argument, I will show that there are teachers who get paid, to, well, do nothing. Reassignment centers, which are located in NYC, often called as 'Rubber Rooms', is a facility where teachers who committed misconduct were sent and they get paid (full salary), while waiting for their pending cases to be solved, so basically they get paid doing nothing. {1}{2}

About 600 teachers were in that facility, accused of wrongdoings or not really teaching at all, and they got paid then. Let's assume the teachers were aken away, and the saying goes, ;ess teachers, more students will fail, it's true, who teaches the students? Who is to blame when students fail? 8 out of 9 school trustees in the Houston Independent School District think that it’s the teachers’ fault when students fail. {3}

To quote some statistics based on this reliable website {4}:

33.33% of HS seniors did not get a diploma, a study shows.

According to the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, a majority of students fail to graduate in 14 (ie: LA, NY, Miami) of the largest schools in the US.

Nashville's graduation rate is only 50 percent. In Albuquerque and Chicago, the rate is just 52 percent. The rate is only 55 percent or less in Philadelphia, Austin, and New Orleans.

According to a survey conducted by the The American Diploma Project, the employers say that many recent high school graduates do not have basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills they need to function on the job. {5}

In conlusion, I know my arguments aren't the best there is, or even great, but it's worth an effort to argue that, in a way, students fail because of lazy teachers, and that there are teachers getting paid doing nothing.

My opponent never really argued for her position, therefore vote CON PRO!

You might want to change the number of rounds, plus the whole opening round for that matter.

Reasons for voting decision: Arguments and sources from Pro, none from Con. This seemed like more of a rant against public schooling than a debate.

Reasons for voting decision: It is unclear of who is debating which side. Nonetheless, Pro organized his arguments, made rebuttals, had much more content than Con, and did basically many more things better.
