I think that public schools in UK shouldn't follow a religion. I think this for the following reasons:
•It deters parents from sending their children to a public school. •Children are less likely to want to voice their views about their religion. •Children won't have an opportunity to form their own opinion about religion etc. Dear opponent: Please make valid points, not silly, irrelevant ones.
I nominate Confucianism as being A certain religion which should be embraced. 1) Universal ethical values: Hsiao: love within the family: love of parents for their children and of children for their parents Yi: righteousness Xin: honesty and trustworthiness Jen: benevolence, humaneness towards other 2) Due to "jen", we can note that tolerance is upheld. Thus, people of different religions could speak their minds at their leisure. This renders all 3 of Pro's problems as non-applicable |

If Confucianism is to be embraced as a religion in schools, whats to stop parents from being deterred completely because the schooling system wants/encourages children to follow a certain religion? even if a different religion was to be adopted in schools, many parents still wont want to send their children to a religious public school. Parents are likely to either spend money and time on home-tutoring or pay extortionate amounts to send their children to unreligious private schools further away.
The morality promoted in Confucianism consist of general values which are applicable to mostly everyone (for the few conflicting values which it has, the promotion of tolerance makes up for this). All Britain would have to do is run a public campaign flaunting the ideas of this religion, so that parents would feel comfortable with sending their children to public schools. Once parents are aware of what kind of religion this is, they would be more willing to send their children to public schools. |

Though I probably wouldn't have had room for that one anyway.
Also, what do you mean by:
"Dear opponent: Please make valid points, not silly, irrelevant ones"
I may take up this debate if you answer my questions.
