Rap is simply poetry to the beat of a drum or repetetive beat or tune. Don't get me wrong, Rapping does take talent, way more talent than I have but it IS NOT music.

I thank my opponent for such an interesting topic.

I offer the following definition:

music- an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

Rap is music by my opponent's definition because it contains all the elements provided in my definition of music. The lyrics express ideas, harmony in the meter, melody is provided by the pitch and speed of the syllables. Color is all of these put together.

First thing I'm going to pick on. Music can not be restrained by a definition. One can spend his/her whole life in the learning of Music and not learn everything about it.

Second, Rap is speaking through a microphone with organized words a person has written. If Rap is music then any Lawyer, Teacher, Company Spokesperson or anyone organizing and presenting words in different rythms or pitches could be called musicians. Rhythm by the way is the subdivision of a space in a repeated pattern.

I would like to thank my opponent for an organized response.

I agree with my opponent that "One can spend his/her whole life in the learning of Music and not learn everything about it." But what can be called music is not undefinable. My definition provides what can be called music, and by that definition, rap is music.

A musician is any person, whether professional or not, skilled in music; so, not everyone can be called a musician.

I await my opponent's response, and wish him luck.

As my opponent has dropped all of my arguments, I extend them.

What rap is to you is not what rap is to the world.

I eagerly await my opponent's next response.

I appologize for the previous argument.

Rap is not music. I myself listen to it and also listen to very complicated Music with Chord structure, Progression. Rap has no right to be in the musical category. Rap is simply, simple. I do admit that not all music is complex but Rap goes so low in simplicity it's hard to let it stay in the category of Music. I do enjoy Rap myself but I believe it could become more popular if it goes into it's own category. It deserves to be in it's own category.

I thank my opponent for his response.

Rap is simple, but it still fits the 4 elements of music my opponent agreed to.
These are rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. If these are present, then rap is music.

Rap has:
Rhythm- words are said in determinate patterns
Melody- one voice with the only tune
Harmony- does not apply to any solo composition
Color- if the above three are put together you get color

1. Use of the word "ain't" disproves you.

2. You are also religiously incorrect; don't say about him what you can also say about yourself and expect it to go unnoticed.

1) I ain't a geek. I am smarter than a geek.
2) Stop spreading your religious beliefs around. Judgment day does not exist. I do not need an "awakening."

Swearing makes people cry, why be a poor spot on the subject of Love. Honestly if you like to Win you must be a piece of grass for when grass grows it gives off more energy than it uses, this is called Photosynthesis. I don't know how to speel this but you know it goes this way some times when you ahve a mom that beats you. Now skittles on the other hand won't hurt you Skittles are my friend, i like to stick them up my butt hole sometimes just for the sheer enjoyment. By they way that is the sugar talking for Ijust ate three bags of skittles Notice how I'm using correct writing teqniques, minus organization for organization is for wimps. If you have read this far I feel bad for you. Now to go on with this statement, God is the only way. When judgment day comes, you will learn. I love everyone unconditionally even my "Opponent". I know he doesn't love me but I pray for people like him to get a awakening.

The song Before Tommorro Comes- Alter Bridge is an awsome song. Here are the lyrics:

I couldn't sleep I had to listen
Into a conscience knowing so well
That nothing comes from indifference
I look inside of myself
Will I find some kind of conviction
Or will I bid the hero farewell
Will I be defined by things I could have been
I guess time will only tell
I guess time will only tell

So don't let it be
Before tomorrow comes
Before you turn away
Take the hand in me
Before tomorrow comes
You can change everything

I curse my worth and every comfort
That blinded me for way too long
Damnit all I'll make a difference from now on
Cause I'm wide awake to it all
Cause I'm wide awake to it all

So don't let it be
Before tomorrow comes
Before you turn away
Take the hand in me
Before tomorrow comes
You can change everything

Does anyone care it ain't right what we're doing?
Does anyone care it ain't right where we're going?
Does anyone dare justify how we're living?
Does anyone here care at all?

There are more but I can't type that m

Let's play a little with the title premise:

"Oranges, excluding citrus and other variations of oranges, are not fruits".

Citrus is the family of fruit that oranges belong to. Hip Hop is the family of music (and the culture) that rap belongs to. Because oranges are a citrus fruit, and variation of oranges- navel, nectarines, etc.- are citrus fruit, the statement does not make sense. Because rap is music, and variations of rap- gangsta, conscious, dub, raggamuffin, etc.- are music, your statement does not make sense.
