Reality television is a genre of television programming which presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and features ordinary people instead of professional actors.[citation needed] Although the genre has existed in some form or another since the early years of television, the term reality television is most commonly used to describe programs of this genre produced since 2000.it is just the perception of people that matters !!

First of all, I would like to begin my argument with the reminder that *reality television is "purportedly" unscripted, the underlying implication there being that the majority of the show is the actual, "real" reactions of the characters. However, this is not the case. The technical definition of "scripted" is "the text of a play, broadcast, or movie". (http://www.thefreedictionary.com...) In relation to a TV program, the term "unscripted" refers only to the fact that the DIALOGUE of the characters has not been written by a team of writers and then practiced and blocked by the characters in advance. However, reality television is far from the reality that its producers would have us believe. Everything about the reality program - from the theme, the setting, the activities and even (and I will elaborate on this later) the emotions and thus the reactions and responses of the characters - are controlled by the producers, either directly or indirectly. Take, for example, The Bachelor. By taking these young women and dictating the terms of their stay on the program, the conditions and elements under which they must operate, and giving them an ultimate goal, their actions and responses become wrapped around the ultimate endeavor - winning over The Bachelor. Yes, the show is "technically" unscripted, but by warping the elements and environment of the show's characters, we perpetuate this false reality. We take "ordinary" people and throw them into a situation under which they must operate while still attempting to maintain their dignity (or, in some cases, lack thereof) for an audience for whom they know they will be eventual entertainment. Not only is this more limiting to the characters than it would be for an actual non-reality program because the actors know and are familiar with their limitations and have room to work with them, but "reality" tv also puts the characters under innumerable stress in forcing them to perform and perpetuates this false reality to the public, broadcasting to the country that exploitation is okay, that falsification is okay, and that we as a nation have no qualms about distorting what is and what is not reality and then publishing it to the general community.
So, to crystallize, reality tv should be banned because it is an exploitation of a minority and a manipulation of a majority and toys with the perceptions of both the characters forced to perform and the public who is forced to watch. It brings down our nation as a whole and perpetuates the mindless entertainment industry, causing nothing but degradation and harm to society.

reality shows are necessary to insure that the brain dead of society have something to occupy their non-existant minds.

Pro gets my vote for actually posting an argument, though it is sad when that is considered enough of an argument to vote on.

Reality shows lead some people to think they can do potentially fatal things.
