Pro

Religion is horrible! Imagine if there were no religion! The Muslim terrorists would never have destroyed the twin towers!!!!

Also, HELL IS DISGUSTING! Any religion that says if you do not believe, you will BURN IN HELL is a bunch of HOGWASH.

My opponent MUST ADMIT he cannot give ONE SPEC of religion doing ANY good!!
BuTo

Con

Firstly, I want to clarify that I am not arguing that religion is only good, just that it's not all horrible. There are lots of lovely aspects of religion, such as love for all and kindness and the belief to reserve judgement.

However, I am willing to agree that fundamentalist religion is wrong, that people who take the Bible/Qu'ran literally are bound to be dangerous, it's a two thousand year old book.

It cannot be said religion is without fault. Christianity preaches love and then discriminates against gays, Muslim say each person is equal and then brutally assault women. However, this is not in ALL cases, only extremists. And while you may have the argument that even that proves religion is bad, perhaps the fault is not in the religion, but in the people who have the religion. Perhaps people shouldn't have religion because they themselves are bad.

That being said, religion has done many wonderful things. Believers have given us wonderful artwork in the past (The Taking of Christ by Carravagio, David by Michelangelo), it has maybe made people think about their actions a bit more, even if for impure reasons, and it has contributed many charities and organisations to help people in need.

But even think about the small things, it helps a lot of people sleep at night, it assures them of justice, and it makes death slightly less scary for those who are afraid. And maybe religion is bad for other things, but it was supposed to be good. It's the people that have screwed it up.

Pro if you want details of them doing good, challenge me. Even as an atheist, I'm not dumb enough to deny the histories of good works.

Invisible. If you think your arguments are so good, do a real debate, with 3-5 rounds.

@invisibledeity Please explain Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Were not all their good deeds done in the name of religion? Albeit they were of two different religions. You cannot say that all religion is bad. If, in fact, what they did was in the name of their religion. Which I do believe it was.

@invisibledeity Dude you need to calm down. I am an atheist as yourself, but i gotta warn you not to go jelly. First, you are making atheists look like they are gonna kill somebody. Second, there can be no empirical evidence about God's existence, but there is also no evidence that God doesn't exist. So if you are really sure you can argue about God's nonexistence and win,you gotta debate an idiot. Third, religion ain't that bad as you say (i myself like the culture and traditions of my national religion - Ortodox Christianity). Think what are you debating about first.

@thesupporter Earth shifts it's position towards and away from sun every year. The closest destination is 147 million km (northern hemisphere winter) and farthest about 152 million (northern hemisphere summer). That's a variance of 5 million km. What you stated is a logical fallacy.

Dude how about the earth itself if it were a mile closer to the sun it would be a barren wasteland but if it were a mile farther from the sun it would be a ice age forever

This site isn't for angry people. I believe it is meant for reasoning. It has been established that God cannot be proven as he doesn't want to be. If you had unlimited power, those are one of the perks. Questioning His ways only prove your ignorance as a human being, like the rest of us. You can post here until you are blue, but you are correct in saying that there will be no "prove" of a God. And I can promise you, even if there WERE prove of a God, a higher power like the Vatican or the Government in your locale WILL suppress it. Pretty much like aliens. Think about it.
I'm not taking off my tinfoil hat either.

Reasons for voting decision: S&G: random ALL CAPS, and thinking everystatement needs to end with lots of "!!!!" ARGUMENT: COn gave examples of religion doing good things, which undermines pro's argument that they have done none.

Reasons for voting decision: Neither side cited actual sources but Con made some half-decent arguments instead of baseless assertions. Grammar and conduct points also go to Con for not randomly using caps or doing the DDO equivalent of yelling at people.

Reasons for voting decision: Con made good arguments and refuted Pro's statements which were sufficient enough to an easy win against Pro as this was a "Single" round debate.

Reasons for voting decision: One round debates almost always benefit the contender because the instigator never gets to respond to the arguments. In this case, PRO argued that CON could not provide one example of religion doing anything good. CON not only provided one - artwork - but CON went beyond that and refuted PRO's case by divorcing religion and its adherents. In the future, PRO, I would warn you to be careful about generalizing the opposition.

Reasons for voting decision: Con offered arguments that were unrefuted. I've always thought one round "debates" tend to be a little odd.
