Religion is needed or not?
The Religion, Establishments"s Card game
The more I think, the more religions become establishment"s way to control the public. Religions has appeared since the new stone age began because they started the farming then they should care about the weather and some changes of nature. So they though the changes has been controlled by a transcendent exist. Then it became the religion like totemism, animism, shamanism and etc. From ancient countries, Each of governments changed people"s various religions to an only one national religion to strengthen royal authority.
And the biggest reason why I think like that about religions, it"s the abolition of slave system in England in 1833. The establishment has been changed by the Industrial Revolution from sugar plantation owners who used slaves and to factory owners. Naturally the national law changed for from the plantation owners to factory workers. But the price for sugar which was the main stuff for English people"s meals never looked like getting down because of the law of tax on sugar(at that time, the plantation owners demanded to impose taxes on overseas sugar. Then had big price for their sugar with no tax). So Manchester sect(factory owners) needed to make the price down to give workers low salary, Then the sect destroyed West indies sect(plantation owners) with Clapham sect(sect of Christian, did humanitarian things). The trump card was the abolition of slave system to make Clapham sect held Manchester sect"s hands. Clapham sect(=public) saw only humanitarian thing then held Manchester sect"s(=establishment) hands then make the price down(=abolished the system). I really don"t know it"s possible what some dirty establishments believe the god purely. And in human civilization, I think religions were helpful when some buildings developed by religions and others.. but when there are news about religion wars, I really think it must disappeared. It"s difficult, how do you think about religions?
Observation: My opponent mainly attacks the Catholic church but I am apostolic and thus this government based religion doesn't apply to me.
According to one of their early writers, the Apostolic Church stands for first-century Christianity in faith, practice, and government, "to make known world-wide the forgiveness of sins through the atoning death of Christ, the baptism in water by immersion; the baptism of the Holy Spirit with signs following; the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit; the five gifts of our Ascended Lord; and the vision called in the New Testament, the Church which is His body." As intimated in that statement, the practice of signs and wonders is an integral part of their doctrine.
The doctrine of the Apostolic Church is similar to most evangelical churches. They believe in the unity of the Godhead and the distinctions between the members of the Trinity. Regarding salvation, they teach the need for conviction of sin, repentance, restitution, and confession for salvation. Like most churches within the Methodist tradition, they teach the possibility of a believer falling from grace. Where they differ from many evangelicals is in the Pentecostal teaching of tongues as a sign of Holy Spirit baptism and in their teaching that the ministry of apostles and prophets should never cease in the Church Age.
This is mostly an accurate description of my religion. so since his argument doesn't address mine at all it's pretty much gone.
Religion is beneficial
Sub point A: Religion can help you change bad habits
There is a book called Habits why we do what we do in life and business. They show something called the habit loop.
The Cue is what makes you do something, the routine is what you do and then there's the reward. The book shows an example of how people take drugs because it may make you feel happy or relive you from stress or etc. There is an organization that came out during the 1990s that helps people resolve this issue basically by replacing the routine. Instead of taking drugs you can go to the organization and make friends with people who were in your situation. You can hang out with them and work with them to get a feeling of happiness or hope. This replaces the routine of doing drugs. They also introduce you to a higher power. Since religion tends to require discipline and develops good characters you end up living a different life. Science was wondering how this method worked but then they realized it simply replaces the routine and by following a higher power you become a better person. Which leads to my next point.
Sub point B: Religion helps you become a better person.
From Genesis to Revelation, there is passage after passage of life lessons. Sure, many of the stories were written centuries ago, and many of the experiences may seem ancient. However, if we look closely, there are basic themes throughout the Bible that still apply today. For instance, when we are hurt by others, God advises us to turn the other cheek. There are verses on forgiveness. There are verses on stewardship and caring for the poor. If we want to know what the difference is between good character and bad character, we only need to look on the written page.http://christianteens.about.com...
There are temptations, trials, rewards, experiences, that you endure as a Christian and even the false religions at least help people develop good character. People who actually devote time to Church/religion and not just on Sunday morning tend to not only be more productive but also more focused. As the habit loop showed by introducing religion into your life you become a better person and you are able to resist terrible habits like smoking and such. The bible is literally a guide on how to live a good life. Religion is literally teaching on how to live life.
Sub point C: religion helps with love and relationships
First of all Charity is an act of love. Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. The reason why divorce rates are as high a 50% as shown http://www.apa.org... is because of the society based conception of love that is acceptable by all. Love on first sight. A book known as the Self Beyond Itself even shows the reason why even good people contributed to the horrific actions carried out by the Nazi's is because it was sociably acceptable. Basically since society says its fine it's fine.
First of all Love is an action, when you find someone so attractive on first site that's only one part of love and the least important, Eros love. You have to trust and care and understand your partner in order to love them. You have to choose to love someone after you get to know them. You can't "fall in love" because if you fall in love you will fall into a divorce.
1: agape love
it is defined as a Greek word in the new testament as meaning the love of god. Here is an example from the bible For God so loved (agape) the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16) Also in many studies people who have a close relationship with god tend to have longer relationships. This love basically allows you to embrace the other loves better and is the most important one to have.
2: Eros/sexual/sensational love
The world mostly defines love in this category but what they don't understand is this is just a piece to a bunch of other loves that are vital to have. This love is based off attraction/sex so you can't just have this one alone cause when your spouse gets older it will wear off and relationship would go down hill. It is logical that yes this love will be included cause Bureau of static shows that majority of people's first interest in the other sex is attraction from a distance; so yes this love can be included but it can't be alone. For example as your spouse becomes older she will of course become less attractive over time.
3. family love
A Stanford study showed that family love is the most important because it can determine how you develop and can determine your actions in the future. For example if you grow up with a family who mostly does drugs chances are you will to, or if you grow up with a family who shows compassion and gives to charity you probably will be influenced by those actions and do the same thing when you grow up. It is essential that you have love in the home you grow up in so you can understand how to love your future spouse and children. Look at Christ Brown hitting Rihanna. It turns out that Chris Brown himself had an abusive dad.
4. brotherly love/companionship love
This love is friendship love or brotherly love among members in church. This is a great love to have because you are more open and have people you can count on in hard times.
Conclusion: All these loves are embraced in the bible. The bible shows these 4 components of love and demonstrates them in action. Thus the bible and religion is still needed to help individuals form and keep relationships.
Final Conclusion/ some of the commandments : Even the catholic church which me and you agree with isn't that great is needed. Just believing in a higher power and reading the bible and following commandments can make you a better person. Deciding not to commit adultery can help you maintain a relationship. Deciding not to steal can make the world a safer place and help contribute to national tranquility. Deciding not to murder can ensure you don't have to live in a prison for the rest of your life. Honouring your parents can ensure you are able to call them in times of need.
But that raises a question, how does the bible help you follow these? Many stories and scriptures in the bible relate back to these commandments. One such example is how the bible states your days shall be long if you respect and honor your parents. The bible shows the consequences of committing murder/following false gods and so on.
