Creating an invisible being that constitutes laws and defines our humanity is the best way to gain control. In the past, sciences were stopped because it didn't follow the laws of God. For example: When Copernicus argued that the Earth was not the center of the universe and it was rather the sun, the church tried to quickly kill his story.
Religions control groups of people.

Religion is an abstract ideal that cannot be "created" anymore than "justice" or "equality" can be created. The manner in which it is used by man gives religion its flawed practical application.

Many religions do not believe in any supreme being above humanity. This would lend itself to the idea that, at a minimum, not all religions are created to control groups of people.

Additionally, religion is not- nor should it be- the basis for law. I contend that this has been obvious for centuries and was obvious centuries before the problems mentioned by the Pro side.

I will at least prove the opposite of the Pro side: religion was not created to control people. I expect to show religion, if at all created, was created primarily as a means of explaining things that we either cannot know, do not know, or are actually as a result of a supreme being.

I do have a few arguments in return to your own.

Religion, regardless of the origin country, origin scriptures or teachings was created by man. The ideals and principles inscribed in all religions, ranging from modern Christianity, to Judaism, to Buddhism, were written down by a person, and as such, was created in a very real fashion.

You are right - many religions do not believe in any supreme being above humanity, but that certainly does not lend itself to the idea that not all religions are created to control groups of people. Even those that do not have an omniscient being that they believe in, each religion still has a set of doctrines or rules that influence, or control, the actions of the believers. Take the King James version of the bible - before this edition, it was believed that divorce was a sin against God - but King James hated the queen that he had married. He proceeded to re-write the bible, under his own name, to say that divorce was now okay. Not only has the King James version been heavily carried out into modern society, our current ideals on divorce are very lucid. Controlling the idea that divorce is now okay.

I also agree with the idea that religion should not be the basis for law, but like the example above, religion has creeped into all manner of law and politics.

Ok i see how you can believe that there is no heaven/hell and whatever lakersfan4life24, but at least try to keep an open mind about even though religion may have been used to scare people, whether it be in the last millennia or modern day; please take the take time to learn about other reasons why people still practice religion in the first place. Just please take look at the people (middle and lower classes) of Israel, Libya, el Salvador, etc.

Yes. Also made to scare people into believing. No one actually knows what will happen when we die. I don't know if there is a heaven or hell or reincarnation or coalescing into another being.

Have you at least considered other people in non 1st world countries? A lot of the times religion is all they have left in order to cope with whatever trials and tribulations are going on in their country at this moment.
