I'd like to thank Huan and all the judges before this goes down. When I talk about legitimizing the sport, I don't only mean a strong following in the United States. I also mean that we'll able to hold our own against a number one team and eventually take a World Cup title. Until we're at that level, soccer will still be a second class sport in the United States.

1) Although there is a strong following for soccer in the United States, it will never be able to equal that of the world soccer powers (i.e. England, Brazil, France, Italy, etc.) because the United States is too distracted by other sports. I do not see American football or baseball losing their popularity any time soon and quite frankly people are unable to follow more than a few sports. Yes, I do pay attention to the MLB, MLS, EPL, NBA, NHL, NFL, and both major NCAA sports, but I really only follow the MLB and the EPL closely. Most people follow this trend, although I will concede that there are a few people who may be able to pay attention to all sports all the time. However, these people are so few and far between that they themselves will be unable to ever legitimize the sport.

2) Too many sections of the country are unexposed to the sport. We are fortunate to grow up in the NY/NJ area, where there is a huge following for soccer. However, outside of the East and West coasts, there is a significantly smaller focus on soccer. I contend that there will never be a soccer program like "Hoover Football" or any basketball program in Indiana, therefore preventing the United States from ever maximizing its potential. We are currently unable to beat the world in baseball and basketball, where the country does focus. How are we ever going to be able to win in soccer, a sport that most of the country doesn't care about?

3) Soccer is too inaccessible in the United States. FSC, the largest provider of games and programming to American households, is not available standard on any basic cable packages. ESPN does carry games, but rarely in prime time slots. As long as this trend continues, people won't be able to build up a love of the sport. If nobody could watch football or baseball, they too would be insignificant in the eyes of the American public. However, the fact that people can go home every Sunday afternoon and catch a game helps maintain fans. Even when soccer is on, people aren't willing to give up their Saturday and Sunday mornings to watch a game.

4) The quality of the MLS is too low to draw in new fans. The excitement of American sports is that we can go to a stadium near us and see the best players in the world. Watching the MLS is like watching minor league baseball- yes, it does serve some of the same purposes as watching the MLB, but the level of play is just not the same. Only the top level of play is able to draw in the fans that are necessary to sustain a sport in the United States. If the NFL moved to Australia and the CFL moved to the US, people would be much less interested in watching CFL games, knowing that they are of lower quality. Unless the United States can bring in the top talent necessary to have the top league in the world, soccer will continue to stumble.

5) Justice and morality are functionally identical; whether justice is systemic and morality is personal, justice deals with society and morality deals with all, or any other definitional distinction is made, both are systems of ethics which have the exact same goal and method: prescribing rules to regulate the conduct of persons. Justice cannot refer to a universal, abstract, or even general system of morality because there is no way that human beings can objectively evaluate themselves or others to determine how such a standard might apply to themselves or others. Indeed, judgments from objective or even intersubjective standpoints are thus impossible, as Friedrich Nietzsche writes:

The falsity of human judgment derives firstly from the condition of the material to be judged, namely very incomplete, secondly from the way in which the sum is arrived at on the basis of this material, and thirdly from the fact that every individual piece of this material is in turn the outcome of false knowledge, and is so with absolute necessity. Our experience of another person, for example, no matter how close he stand to us, can never be complete, so that we would have a logical right to a total evaluation of him; all evaluations are premature and are bound to be. Finally, the standard by which we measure, our own being, is not an unalterable magnitude, we are subject to moods and fluctuations, and yet we would have to know ourselves as a fixed standard to be able justly to assess the relation between ourself and anything else whatever.

Can't wait to see how this turns out. I'd just like to say that despite the poor showing in the last world cup, the United States usually has a pretty decent team.
