Now, I have played both Runescape and World of Warcraft. Both games in my opinion are very good games. Runescape is a more simple, fun for everybody game that has tons of features and is constantly updating. People seem to complain a lot about the graphics in this game. I think this is wrong because

1) Runescape's graphics have been updated and now look better than ever.
2) The game runs on Java, there are no other games that runs on Java and have better graphics than Runescape.
3) It runs on a web browser. That means that there are no long downloads or CD's required.

Also, the quests are great. Unlike most MMORPG's, Runescape's quests actually have depth to them. In games like WoW, you have quests along the lines of:
1) Kill this many monsters.
2) Get this many items. (By killing monsters.)
3) Talk to this person. (So he can give you another quest to kill more monsters.)
4) Once you are all done with the quests in an area, move onto the next area to get more quests. (Again, killing more monsters.)

Runescape is updated constantly. Whether it be a new quest, a new area, or new weapons and skills, they are all great updates, also, the updates in Runescape are free. In WoW, they charge you for the main updates. It could cost you up to $40 to get in to another area!

Also, one last thing, THE SKILLS! There are 24 skills in Runescape, all of which contribute one way or another to your character. They are fun to gain levels in because they are very different from each other. Tired of woodcutting? Okay, go hunting or farming! It's very fun to train so many different skills. In games like WoW, you can only be one class and have a certain low amount of skills. In Runescape, you can do whatever you want! Want to be a warrior? Okay, whip out the two-handed sword and start chopping! Want to be an Archer? Okay, just take out your bow and start firing away! It's that simple!

This is why I think Runescape is better than most of it's competition.

(PS: Even though WoW is repetitive and boring, over 40% of it's players are addicted to it, causing social and anxiety problems with their life.)

The resolution states that we should be looking to how people portray it. Well, here are some quotes of people who have commented on how bad Runescape is:
"if u have no life its fun lol." – Connor C.
"its okay. but only if ur good at it. if ur not, and have a low level, then u cant do much." – E
"i couldn't understand how to work it." – Lyndsaymarie14

(Quotes taken from http://answers.yahoo.com...)

I'll take each of these comments and make a rebuttal based on them.

Contention 1: It's only fun if you "have no life."

I doubt that any of you think that Runescape is a low-intensity game. That is to say, in order to have fun and get farther in levels, one must play the game for very extended periods of time.

Most MMORPGs suffer from this issue. The average player on World of Warcraft spends 21 to 22 hours a week playing the game (http://www.nickyee.com...), and this is not isolated to WoW. Runescape has numbers just as high.

So, is it arguable that people that play Runescape have no life? If you believe that the casual phrase means "spending excessive time playing a computer game," then yes.

Contention 2: You have to be high in level to have fun

Another tragic flaw in the MMORPG genre is the major gap in entertainment quality between low and high level players. Players on Runescape who have achieved higher levels have many more options open to them than a low level beginner, which can be a major turn-off for the game.

Contention 3: Some players just don't understand how the game works

Runescape doesn't work for everyone – MMORPGs are really dedicated to the hardcore player who is willing to invest the time into playing for practically endless hours to achieve a high level character. There are definitely people who aren't willing to invest that much time, and will ultimately find the game dull and unsatisfying.

The hitting point for both this and the last argument, however, are simply the opinions of the people that play the game. Yes, there are people that don't like the game. And isn't that exactly what makes a game unliked?

So, I believe my argument stands on the following grounds: 1) The opinion of a game, in a general sense, is decided by what the general public believes. Clearly there are significant numbers of people who find Runescape to be a bad game, which really makes it just that. 2) The game takes excessive time to play to the point of fun. But, if the play isn't fun up to that point, then is it really play?

Please vote negative on this resolution. I now turn over to my opponent...

Of course, if the resolution was crafted better and/or there wasn't so much irrelevant reference to WoW, there might be a better shot of a good way to take this puppy without semantics rape.
