Parents who find there child is ill with a life threatening condition should not be allowed to make a genetic match for that child! The child who is made as a genetic match has merely been farmed to donate, stem cells, and bone marrow and whatever else might be asked of them!
If the child is a genetic match you surly run the risk or producing yet another sick child? not to mention the pressure they have been put under, how will the child feel if he fails to save his sibling?
Is it selfish of a parent to try and save one child by the birth of another?

Sure, I'll give it a go.

Whether it is "good" or not is rather subjective. You appear to be concerned about the physical and psychological affects on the donor child, which is a reasonable concern.

It is my opinion that given the right set of circumstances this can be a positive decision. The first obstacle would be creating a second child with same medical condition. Often that can be avoided with the same genetic manipulation that creates the perfect match for the sick child in question.

A psychiatric evaluation of the parents would be helpful to determine that the parents are wanting a second child and not just an organ donor for their existing child. Continued counseling throughout the second child's adolescence would be necessary to help the child understand that although they were conceived in order to help a sibling, they are also loved and appreciated individually.

Parents also need to be made to understand forcing the second child to donate when they are old enough to verbalize refusal is detriment to that child, and the child should always have a say in the situation without having to bear any guilt for their decisions. Giving the child that power over the situation helps to demonstrate to them that they too are important, and it helps foster the child's trust in their parents and the other adults in their lives.

If handled in a completely positive manner, most children would be thrilled to save the life of a family member, to be that person's hero. Whether it is a good or bad experience depends on the psychological preparation of the entire family prior to the birth of the second child and beyond.

I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow or later so that Con has ample time to come back and respond on the third round since he/she missed the second round.

The basis of this debate hinges on the semantical meaning of good. Good for whom? How do you define good?
