Pro

To keep the title short here is my actual proposed argument.

Saying anything along the lines of "Pro/Con wins" or "You should vote for Pro/Con" before the end of the round should be an automatic forfeiture or point loss.

Arguments:
1) It's unprofessional to say it early and looks stupid.
2) It distracts from the main topic at hand.
3) It's annoying.

It should be just like a trial. Stay with the facts until the closing argument, then convince people to vote for you.

Enjoy!
Rezzealaux

Con

Burden of Proof. As long as PRO fails to prove the resolution true you automatically vote CON because I'm not claiming anything.

"1) It's unprofessional to say it early and looks stupid."
> Prove it's unprofessional to everyone.
> Prove it looks stupid to everyone.

"2) It distracts from the main topic at hand."
> Prove it distracts from the main topic at hand for everyone.

"3) It's annoying."
> Prove it's annoying for everyone.

I await something substantive to refute.

Pro

First of all, you also have the burden of proving the opposite. You are not taking the "Not PRO" side you are taking the "CON" side. That in fact means that you must prove the opposite of the statement. Nice try though.

Second, I don't have to prove that "everyone" agrees. Just the majority.

Third, this was meant to be a fun debate (hence the 500 words), so take it down a notch ;-)

Fourth, since this is a matter of opinion, the voting at the end would be all the proof that I need.
Rezzealaux

Con

"You are not taking the "Not PRO" side you are taking the "CON" side."

The resolution is a claim; one that the instigator has put forth as truth. If my opponent's resolution was "A UFO landed in my backyard", he'd have to show that his side is true. I don't need to show that a UFO DIDN'T land in his backyard, as I'm not the one framing the resolution. I'm not even arguing as CON, I'm arguing as the contender.

Burden of proof still holds true.

No proof is being given.

Ergo I win.
Debate Round No. 2
aaronr8684

Pro

If I said "A UFO landed in your backyard", I would have to prove that it did and you would have to prove that it didn't. If neither of us were able to, it would be a tie. There are three options on these debates, not two.

Proof of an opinion claim can't be given w/o statistics of the affected population. Because, I'm pretty sure that, no surveys have been taken for this topic for the people on this site, I will rely on the future statistics provided by the voting results.

There is my pro
Rezzealaux

Con

That's hardly the case. A person that makes A claim must have warrants to back up the claim. As I am not making any claim on the resolutional level, I do not have that level of burden - however, PRO does: he wrote the statement. The only possible case where it can be a "tie" is if both of us are utterly horrible OR if I had not made the argument of BoP.

Future statistics have not been presented, so they cannot be used to claim to meet BoP.

Since BoP has not been met,
you vote CON.

Burden of proof usually rests on Pro because Pro must uphold the resolution and Con needs to refute it. Many high school debates require BoP on pro, such as Pufo, Parli, LD, and POLICY. Pro can usually win with BoP/logical reasoning.

This burden of proof thing is annoying. I should challenge Rezzealaux to a debate on using the concept of "burden of proof". Haha...it would probably be more popular than this debate ;-)

Just to elaborate on what VenomousNinja said, Pro does not always initiate the debate, either. The topic may be "Fusion Restaurants Are Good" and instigator takes the Con position. This person would have to prove that Fusion Restaurants are NOT good. This is not a trial, where someone has to overcome a presumption of innocence. Rather, both debaters are essentially trying to fill their buckets with logical water, and both start off empty.

Just a comment, Burden of Proof is a big pet peeve of mine, and like PRO said, your taking the CON side not the NOT PRO side. Burden of Proof lies on both debaters.

My comment was also directed at Ragnar. I did also copy/paste the URL into the browser, followed by clicking on the freewebs link, followed by learning what Rickrolling was (and duckrolling). Man, I love Wikipedia.

No, no, no... my sigh was directed as Ragnar. I made that comment long before R2.

Haha...yea maybe unprofessional was a bit of a overstatement, but that wasn't my main claim...just a space filler. I just meant this to be a quick fun debate between the serious, 2 hours of research, debates. O well... :-D

Would it be unprofessional to announce who I'm going to vote for right now?
