People say that when you get into a fight at school both or more people should get the same punishment. If it means defending yourself, starting a fight, instigating etc. what do you think?

I accept this challenge, and look forward to a good debate.

I would first like to clarify the resolution and provide some definitions, as it appears to be unclear. From what my opponent has stated, I am guessing that the resolution should be, "All people in a fight at school should be given the same punishment." As my opponent has taken the Con side, I will be arguing that students who have gotten into fights at school should be given the same punishment. I define a "fight" as "a violent confrontation or struggle between two or more people".

In a school fight, determining who is or isn't to blame is not always possible. Both sides of the fight will, almost definitely, have different sides of the story that view the other person as the person to believe. Often, misinterpretations of actions can become the causes of disagreements, which lead to fights. According to to "Youth Violence: The Harvard-MetLife Survey of Junior and Senior High School Students", 42% of fights are caused by someone being hit, pushed, shoved, or bumped[1]. The person who has been bumped or shoved could see this as the other person instigating a fight, which causes them to be angry and fight back. 33% of students agree with the statement that "When I am really angry, there is no way I can control myself."[2] On the other hand, the person that shoved or bumped someone else could have seen it as a non-violent, non-hostile gesture, done jokingly, with no intention of starting a fight. Therefore, if a person can't determine who is to blame, who started the fight, or who defended themselves, you cannot give different punishments, and punishments should be the same.

Hello sk8erdude21 and welcome to DDO.
Word of advice: When you post a debate, you should have a CLEAR resolution.
As it is, you have chosen Con, but it's difficult to work out from both the topic title and your round one which side you are taking.

This would have been better suited for the forums.

(I'm not trying to be condescending; i'm genuinely trying to help.)
