Just because people aren't forced to wear seat belts or motorcycle helmets doesn't mean that you can't wear a seat belt or helmet. If the risks that go along with not using a seat belt or helmet concerns you then wear a seat belt whenever you are in a car, wear a helmet whenever you are on a motorcycle, and let other people make up their own minds. Oliver Wendell Holmes said it best when he said "My right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins." People should be allowed to take as many risks as they want with their own safety. People should be allowed to do whatever they want with their own person and property, as long as they don't physically harm the person or property of a non consenting other. Therefore, people should be allowed to not wear a seat belt or motorcycle helmet because the only person it puts in danger is the person making the decision.

I notice that my opponent is from Nevada.

http://www.bhsi.org...

In Nevada, there are no bicycle helmet laws in most counties, and for the few counties that do, the restriction is only for those under 17.

I am going to argue that seatbelt and helmet laws should not be abolished, but instead, should be restricted to those under the age of responsibility, whatever that may be.

Kids generally aren't old enough to make responsible decisions. One accident without wearing a seatbelt or a helmet could kill a kid, or put him in extreme pain and injury that could negatively impact the rest of his life.

This especially applies to toddlers. They can barely buckle their own seatbelts. If parents aren't required to make sure that the child has a seatbelt, that's like signing their death warrant. Putting a kid in the seat of a moving car without a seatbelt is too much risk. They could very easily die an easily preventable death. Why risk it?

Now, to directly address my opponent's arguments directly.

"Just because people aren't forced to wear seat belts or motorcycle helmets doesn't mean that you can't wear a seat belt or helmet."
A kid probably wouldn't even notice the seatbelt.

"If the risks that go along with not using a seat belt or helmet concerns you then wear a seat belt whenever you are in a car, wear a helmet whenever you are on a motorcycle, and let other people make up their own minds."
A kid isn't even fully aware of the risks.

"People should be allowed to take as many risks as they want with their own safety."
What if they aren't even properly aware of the risks?

"People should be allowed to do whatever they want with their own person and property, as long as they don't physically harm the person or property of a non consenting other."
In that case, a parent should be required to make sure that their child is wearing a seatbelt, or else that child is quite likely to be harmed.

"Therefore, people should be allowed to not wear a seat belt or motorcycle helmet because the only person it puts in danger is the person making the decision."
This would mean that parents would decide whether or not their children wear seatbelts, so that contradicts itself.

In conclusion, seatbelt and helmet laws should remain, at least for little kids.

Extend all of my arguments.

In review, toddlers aren't fully aware that seat belts are almost necessary for safety, so a parent should be required by law to make sure that their children wear seat belts in the car.

Extend all arguments, and another point.

If you don't wear your seat belt, and you get into a crash, you become a dangerous projectile. You should be required to wear a seat belt because it protects those around you, and saves property from being damaged by your body hurtling through the air.

I agree with PRO because when you make it illegal for children not to wear seatbelts, that doesn't mean that they will wear seatbelts; it just means that their parents go to jail.

I agree with PRO. Said laws are tyranny and they don't fix the problem; they only put people in jail for trivial reasons.

I read your argument, but believe that fining anyone (even children) for such trivial reasons is tyranny.
