It is wrong to have teenagers wake up so early to go to school, such as 5:00 in the morning. This drains their energy, based the the National Sleep Foundation:
  • Limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. You may even forget important information like names, numbers, your homework or a date with a special person in your life;
  • Make you more prone to pimples. Lack of sleep can contribute to acne and other skin problems;
  • Lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior such as yelling at your friends or being impatient with your teachers or family members;
  • Cause you to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods like sweets and fried foods that lead to weight gain;
  • Heighten the effects of alcohol and possibly increase use of caffeine and nicotine; and
  • Contribute to illness, not using equipment safely or driving drowsily

In conclusion, I believe that there should be later school hours for teens.

Even so if the sole purpose of waking up at early times is for parents, do they care at all about the HEALTH of the child?

Teenagers function best when they are able to have 8-10 hours of sleep. In every school, there are always students that have to ride the bus. The person that gets picked up first ends up being on the bus for a whole hour before he/she arrives at school. If school starts at 8 in the morning, then that student will probably be picked up at 6:45 in the morning. That also means the student will have to wake up at 6 in the morning to get ready for school and walk to the bus stop. This also means the student should sleep at 8 in the evening, and we all know that 10pm is the usual time when teenagers sleep, if they are willing to cooperate. Hence, I think it would be best if we just had school start a little later.

NikolaGustav, there are special circumstances in which schools start extremely early. For instance, my campus is so large we have two different start times for students and faculty. "Zero Hour" is from 7:15am-2:19pm and regular hour is 8:55am-3:55pm. Shockingly everyone at my school who takes the earlier start loves it, including myself. I wake up every weekday at 6 am and have to carpool to and from school (buses are only for regular hour students) but at the end of the day those extra couple of hours mean so much that they are worth it. And you would be shocked by the amount of energy we have! You rarely see a zero hour kid sleep in class but regular hour kids do it all the time.

The average American employee works from 9-to-5. (1)
The average time that it takes for an American employee to get to work is 27 minuets. (2)
While some students can walk to school and some may be able to ride the buss, many students do not have those luxuries. To insure that those car-riding kids are able to get to school before the bell rings, American public schools must start around 8:30AM; parents have to be able to drop off their kids and then get to work on time.
That is why most public schools start between the hours of 8:25-8:45AM.
