The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more guns (35% of men and 12% of women). America's pervasive gun culture stems in part from its colonial history, revolutionary roots, frontier expansion, and the Second Amendment, which states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Proponents of more gun control laws state that the Second Amendment was intended for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed; and that a majority of Americans, including gun owners, support new gun restrictions.

The is in fact not true!

The Second Amendment protects an individual"s right to own guns; that guns are needed for self-defense from threats ranging from local criminals to foreign invaders; and that gun ownership deters crime rather than causes more crime.

Now for some statistics:

270 MillionAPPROX. # OF CIVILIAN FIREARMS IN AMERICA

200,000TIMES A YEAR WOMEN USE A GUN TO DEFEND AGAINST SEXUAL ABUSE4

3/5POLLED FELONS SAY THEY WON"T MESS WITH AN ARMED VICTIM5

Thank you

Prior Debate statement: I shall define the topic as "Should Gun control be put in place in USA" as for my opponent has only used U.S Statistics.
Rebuttal: My opponent states that in the Second Amendment there is a statement that states "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" this statement is not only grammatically incorrect(according to Cornell University Law School). It does not carry any impact in his argument, for it is a null and unverified statement by the government for its grammatical errors. Currently in the U.S militias are not allowed to be established according to" 0 U.S. Code " 311" unless they form a part of the National Guard. So the current "militias" of the U.S would refer to the military, which in fact is well known to be the most well funded, and the richest military in the world! That would contradict the entire of my opponents argument!

Gun control is crucial for national safety. There are over 91 Americans killed by guns every day! These people are not killed in the name of self-defence but rather for personal reasons- by the murderer. In 1996, Australia established the "Firearms Act 1996" and introduced gun-control. Since the act, murders have dropped by %36. The amount of lives that can be saved by gun-control is explanation. Due to the gun control laws, Australia has been renounced as one of the safest countries for all.

To conclude; Gun's are weapons; whether they are used for self-defense or not. They take lives, and ultimately ruin the moral of victims.

A militia is by definition made up of civilians performing military tasks. There is a reason that when the constitution was written they used specific words and punctuation's. It is crazy that only in more current times that we argue what we think they meant and ignore that they wrote exactly what they meant to help keep people from this very problem. I think the debate should be more Do we still need the 2nd amendment. So we are clear, I do think we need it.

I'm pretty sure you can't use statistics in a debate.
