Pro

As Pro, I will carry the burden of proof in this debate.

Homework will be defined as "schoolwork assigned to be done outside the classroom".

Less Free Time

Homework tends to take up a bit of time after school, especially if a project is assigned, or the assignment is lengthy. Students are, at the same time, encouraged to take up a sport or club. This poses a bit of a conflict, where homework can tend to push away extra time where students can be doing other activities, such as being involved in one extracurricular activity or more. The problem is that, if a student is assigned lots of homework after school (or even a mediocre amount), there is less time for students to be involved in other activities that may be more important than homework itself.

Many students want to spend a decent amount of time with their families or friends, which can also be reduced by the amount of time homework takes. This can be hurtful in some areas, such as less social abilities or weaker family ties.

Reduced Sleep

Sleep is very important for a student, especially a teenager in high school, who needs more of it than the average adult. When a long project is assigned to a student, they can tend to stay up into the late night hours working on it. Sleep is important for a student's alertness and quality work in school. Less sleep can also result in worse school attendance. When one is deprived of sleep and must wake up at a certain time, it becomes harder with less rest to meet that requirement. Students then tend to sleep past the time they are supposed to get ready for school, resulting in an increased amount of tardies and truancies.

Stress

Another problem with homework is that it adds stress. Let's say you have a big project due and you need to put in much time and effort doing it. You realize that on top of that, you have more homework assignments in other classes to fulfill as well. This creates stress, which affects school performance and duties outside of class. Stress also results in less quality work done, since the student will be rushing to finish the work and because stress naturally has this tendency.

Study Time

Study time is different from homework. On top of reduced time, homework itself can prove to be unhelpful during tests. Sometimes, the material given in the homework is irrelevant to the material on the next quiz or test, and is therefore useless when it comes to that test. Studying, I believe, is more important because if you know what you are really being tested on, then you will know what to study and will use your time more wisely.

My Resolution

Some may say that homework helps people learn the material. However, it has proved to be more of a burden then a help, so therefore, it is in my interest to search for a resolution in which students are able to get the help they need without going through stress, reduced time and less sleep. It is this: in a fifty-five minute class, the teacher spends the first thirty minutes teaching the material. The next twenty-five is for students to practice the material taught, so they are better equipped for tests in quizzes. If a student is struggling on the material, he or she can be tutored by a teacher or another student instead of being given homework. That way, the student will be spending better quality time practicing what they need to know, rather than having to do it as part of their grade. Some students already know the material well, and therefore do not need to use the extra time doing something that is useless.

In short, homework causes stress, reduces study and family time, and can be better replaced through tutoring if they need the material. It is not needed, and by these reasons that I have put forth, I contend that it should be banned.
