"... for punishment does not take place primarily and per se for the correction and good of the person punished, but for the public good in order that others may become terrified and weaned away from the evils they would commit."
- (extract from 1578 handbook for inquisitors)

Do we practice this at our own homes ? Punishment taken as a means to strike fear in our children (other than the child being punished).

If not, then should this be the basis for granting punishments/justice when a crime is committed ?

I accept your challenge to support your topic positively. 3 days... agreed!

Clearly we are talking about punishment also known as penalty for doing undesirable things and called parental corporal punishment when practiced at home.In imposing such punishment I agreed that it needs to impart fear for doing something in order to prevent some bad occurrences.Fear comes out from the consequence or the punishment so if ever our laws do not imposed fear to its people then the law must be abolish for it is a useless law that no one will ever believe. It should be practiced at our own homes in order to educate youngsters of what will be the result of their actions that is why punishment means to strike fear so that they will only stick to the things that they ought to do instead of making wrong choices. And for your second question we already know that their are many ways to judge a criminal cases not only by the presence of fear that is so low substance but through technologies.Your quote is a little bit opposing to your stand because it is clearly stated there that punishment really strikes fear on public shame for doing something publicly and in humans feelings are always determined first before understanding, heart before mind ,the feeling of shame for becoming the spotlight makes the person be afraid to do such stupidity.
