Smoking should not be banned because we have no right to take a persons rights and stop them from making their own choices, no matter how harmful they may be. Even though smoking is very dangerous and kills many people, we can not ban it. As long as it doesn't harm anyone other than the smoker it should be allowed. Smoking is a personal choice and we would be stopping free will. As a matter of liberty, the Government shouldn't be telling anybody what they can and can't put into their bodies, even if it is toxic/harmful. What will be next, laws on what we can wear? What we can eat? Because of this, it is clear that smoking should not be banned.

I strongly DISAGREE!
Yes I agree with you that we do not have the right to make people decisions, but! What are laws, the government already has so many laws which we are forced to do! This would be no different.
Also this would be helping the smokers and the future smokers out there. The majority of the smokers don"t want to smoke. Yes some idiots think it is cool to smoke, but later on they will regret that decision. I know this, I have witnessed it. I know at least 40 people that smoke (not including kids at school.) Those people all started mostly in high school, and now they regret it and want to quit, BUT THEY CANT QUIT. Cigarettes are very very very very very very addictive, so if these people could quit then they would. If we ban smoking then the future smokers won"t be in this position, yes there will most likely be access to cigarettes, just like drugs are. But it will be hard to get to them. It is not as if people in a family or ordinary good honest people are going to all that trouble and pay all of that money to get some cigarettes.
Also what was that you said in your argument? "As long as it doesn't harm anyone other than the smoker it should be allowed." Is that it? Well then if you said if it doesn"t harm other people around them then it should be allowed, then you are wrong and I have won! Because it does harm other people, ever heard of "passive smoking?" I"m sure you have heard of this? When other non smoking people are around a person when they are smoking, they are literally smoking as well. People have proven this as well. It has been proven that passive smokers are more likely to have damage to their bodies then the people smoking. And in less we ban smoking passive smoking will always be a problem. When you go out to dinner and there is a smokers area and a non smokers area. This will not help"AT ALL. The smoke will travel over, and the smokers area is not that far away to the non smokers area. Another example would be when you are at home or anywhere and you are around people that smoke, you are now passive smoking. I am an example of this! You go outside and now your passive smoking! Or anywhere in the house!
I hope I have given you more reason to be FOR smoking to be BANNED!

You said that smoking is addictive and you are right. So you just plan on taking all the cigareetes and them 'BAM!', it will be fine? That is not how the human body works. The smokers body will be used to smoking, and as such they will experience withdrawal symptoms and could become very ill. People just don't quit, they have to be slowly weaned off the cigarettes. No one MADE the smoker start smoking and it their choice if they continue. Quitting, while hard, can be done WITHOUT making ridiculous laws. Cigarettes will become avablie on the black market, causing even MORE crime. Our prisons are full as it is, do you know how many people smoke? So many people will go to jail!

A smoking ban would be much different from the other laws, it would be like stopping a person from eating fatty food because it is bad for them. We have no right to do that. What would you do if someone came to your house, told you that from now on, you can not eat fast food, it is now illegal, because other people who you have never met have decided to make it illegal. If you so much as TOUCH fast food, you will go to jail or be fined. All fast food restaurants are closed down, millions of people lose their jobs and income. This WILL happen if smoking is made illegal.

Governments throughout the world make huge profits from levying taxes on cigarettes. This provides money which is used for building schools and hospitals. The tobacco industry also employs tens of thousands of people throughout the world, particularly in poorer, third world countries. Without smoking, these people would have no jobs. Their source of income would be lost and they could die.

Yes, I do know about passive smoking. That is why I CLEARLY stated that smoking is fine as long as it doesn't harm anyone else other than the smoker. Children and people who do not wish to be exposed to the smoke should be kept away and the smoker should only be affected. Smoking should not be allowed in restaurants, parks, public building such as a library etc.

Also, you do know that if we were to ban smoking how many people would be angry? It would be chaos! Even if it is for the persons own good they will not be happy. Just look up the Alcohol Prohibition in the early 1900's. The U.S. decided to ban alcohol and what happened? The Black Market filled with alcohol and soon it got out of control, this lasted about TEN years until the government gave up. If more people get arrested for black market buying then WE have to pay for their confinement. You, the tax payer.

These arguments FIRMLY explain why smoking should not be banned.
