A person convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, also known as DUI and DWI, should not be allowed to own a firearm because they have demonstrated that they are exceptionally irresponsible and foolhardy with the safety of the people around them. If there ever was a group of people that I think should be banned from owning guns it is DUI offenders. It is almost incomprehensible that seemingly minor crimes which involve no violence and which put no one in any physical danger (like stealing cable TV or recording a phone call without consent) are felonies that then prohibit someone from ever owning a firearm, and yet something as serious and lethal as driving while intoxicated is largely given a pass like it is no big deal. We need to make driving while intoxicated a much bigger deal for the offenders. Every year intoxicated drivers destroy tens of thousands of lives. They ruin families and dreams and it is for absolutely nothing more than abject selfishness and irresponsibility. Are these really the kinds of people that we as a society need toting guns around as well? I ask this as a responsible gun owner myself.
