I argue that seatbelts, while useful for preventing fatalities in an automobile collision, should not be forced upon adults. While a child should be protected from harm because many do not know any better, an adult is past the age of consent, and should be able to make his or her own decisions. I believe seat belts laws should be similar to existing bicycle helmet laws, which reflect exactly what I have described. Adults are defined as people over the age of 18. Required pertains to law.

Pro

Claims based on the violation of personal liberty assume that the consequences of choosing not to buckle fall solely on the individual. However, there are significant costs carried by society due to increased health costs, etc. The importance of a person's freedom to choose must be weighed against the economic costs that would be imposed on society due to the increased injuries caused by not wearing a safety belt.

Con

M4sterDeb8er forfeited this round.

Pro

Apparently, Pro has forfeited.

Increasing seat belt use to 90% in the USA would save taxpayers at least $8.8 billion every year (2). This is why 80% of Americans support primary laws requiring the use of seat belts (1). The right of the individual to choose is outweighed by the costs that such a decision imposes upon society. This is why drivers should be required to wear seat belts.

Thank you,
