Should gays be allowed to get married?

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." Because I agree with these starting lines from the Declaration of Independence I stand in strong affirmation that gay marriage should be legalized in the United States. I believe this for two contentions, 1.). It would promote a more unified nation. 2.) We have no right to say they *meaning gays* can't get married.
Contention 1
Allowing gay marriage would promote a more unified nation. If we allow gays to get married then that would send the message that we *being the United States* are truly allowing everyone the "pursuit of Happiness" as stated in our Declaration of Independence. It's that phrase right there that should allow gays to be given the right to marry the one they love If we continue to ban gay marriage then we wouldn't be allowing that right our people and that would go against everything we fight for.
Contention 2
We have no right to say they *meaning gays* can't get married. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…" Nobody has the right to tell someone what they can and cannot do. It would be the same if only gay marriage is legal and straight marriages were banned. No matter what the circumstances the government doesn't reserve the right to control the love lives of its people. Gays are no different than straights other than the fact that they choose to love the same sex. They work just like straights, live just like straights, and care for their partner just like straights. So again what gives us the right to ban their marriage?
For these reasons above, it would promote a more unified nation, and who gives us the right to deny them the right to get married, I STRONGLY urge an affirmative vote. Thank you.

I will attack my opponents case.
He starts out with the declaration of independence. What he forgets is that Blacks were not considered in this document. If a race was not included in this document how could gays be included. Thus, this document cannot be a source.

This is not true. After african americans won their rights their was still racism. Just because we allow gays the right to marry doesn't mean we are going to become more unified.

Yes, we do. According to the definition of democracy we the people have the right to make decisions. 74% of americans believe we should ban gay marriage. We make the decisions. We have made our decision.

What my opponent seems to forget is that "gays" are not a race, it is a life style, as is being straight.

Once African Americans won their rights people started not looking at them as "black" but just as regular people. That right there is an example of how it promotes unity. Allowing gays to be married would allow us to view them no differently than you view me.

If America was a true democracy then we would have no need for the Electoral College, only the popular vote would matter, but this is not the case therefore we cannot be considered a true democracy.

As for 74% of Americans not wanting gay marriage I would 1st like to see where you got this evidence. And assuming 74% of Americans don't want gay marriage then good for them, they don't have to be gay. But for the ones that are gay we are still denying them the right to be married and furthermore "the pursuit of Happiness" as stated in the 1st sentence in our Declaration of Independence.

It didn't directly include straights either so your point is irrelevant.

We do still have racism but we have been moving away from it as best we can. That shows that it can solve some discrimination.

And saying we elected Barrack Obama is in itself showing how far we've moved from the country we once were. As he said in his Inaugural Address...

"This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed, why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall; and why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served in a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath."

He is contradicting himself by saying it includes everyone. The declaration cannot be used in this debate because not everyone i included in the document. Lets look at the constitution which has shown that gay marriage is wrong.
