Homework should not be compulsory because of the policy and meaning of the human right law. The human right policy says that you can do as you want; it means you do not have to do as someone requests or demands. It is up to you to do what you want and when (within reason). Homework is designed for school or college pupils to remember the information they have been learning in school or college and to help them remember it in future circumstances. It is also aimed to keep you thinking and using you brain at home. I am against homework being compulsory because if someone doesn't do their homework it shows something that is actually quite important to know about that person; they can't be bothered. They don't want to aim high and learn. They don't want to practise or use their brain, and if they don't want to do that so be it. It should be their choice what they want to do have school or college. I also do not think homework should be compulsory because it may be harder for some pupils to get their homework done due to activities such as sporting activities or further education lessons or clubs. Do you think homework should be compulsory and why?

Homework should be compulsory. Homework keeps your brain active and keeping your brain active is very important. Scientist have found that keeping your brain active helps build new brain cells amd strengthen connections between the cells. If you want to prevent from getting alzheimers disease you need to keep an active brain. The majority of people will not keep your brain active on your own, for example solving a rubiks cube is a way to keep your brain active but most don't have the patients for it. Homework helps the people who are lazy to keep their brain active. For the people who don't want to use their brains then you are at a higher chance to get alzheimers disease.
Alzheimers disease- degenerative disorder that attacks the brain's nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.
For the people who have sports and clubs, it is your responsibility to get your school work done first, sports and clubs come second and homework is first. If you want to do extra curricular activites then that means you are more responsible and will get your homework done. France does not have any sports or clubs and they get lots of homework and are smarter than most Americans. If sports or/and clubs prevent you from doing your homework then you need to stop doing sports or/and clubs. Extra curricular activities are privlieages while school work or homework is a must do. Homework is to help you remember and to practice what you learned at school. If you learn something new and dont practice it then within 24 hours you will forget 90% of what you learned.

People can easily keep their brain healthy in alternative ways to homework. For example they could do a daily puzzle in the newspaper or buy a puzzle book, play mind games on the internet that are fun yet challenging, eat fish, fruit and other brain healthy foods, take your dog or yourself for a walk, read or do sporting activities. As I have just proved there are very many different ways to keep your brain active other then homework; ways that are challenging to the brain but yet fun and entertaining. Not like homework which could just bore people and make them not want to learn; and also don't forget most children or young adults have school or college at least 5 days a week for 7 hours a day, so they do plenty of brain work there without the extra, unexciting work at home. Basically, in other words, homework has no effect on whether or not your brain is healthy.

Another reason why homework shouldn't be compulsory is because it causes stress and worry. If homework is not done to a high standard, teachers force individuals to redo it or they will give them a lunch time detention or in some cases an academic catch up. This can cause worry to many, but can especially bring apprehension to children with learning difficulties or who are simply not as mentally bright as their fellow classmates. To teachers this will seem as if they are not trying hard enough or will be considered as dumb. When children are called dumb they feel stupid they begin to think they are, they will feel left out and feel as if they cannot do it. They may then quit before they have even got anywhere. These thoughts and criticism will get to their heads and make them stress horribly over homework. Stress can also be brought to families because some parents don't always understand how to help their children with homework. Families see it as an obstacle in their every day life. Kids don"t always get it done because they either don"t understand it, maybe because it wasn't explained thoroughly or because the work confused them.

Sports and clubs do not always come second. If a child is committed to that sport they aren't going to quit just because of some homework that they might not want to do anyway. For example say your child was a black belt in karate. He or she went to many competitions and went through to finals quite regularly. They trained four times a week and absolutely loved it; would you want them to quit? If so, you're going to have one very talented but yet heartbroken child. Also, forgetting 90% of what you learned in 24 hours?! You think homework is going to engrave that information in your brain, just because you have done say 30 minutes extra in a different location? I couldn't disagree more. Yes, homework may help you remember but only for a few extra hours. It's a teachers job to constantly remind pupils of previous work done before they forget completely.

If there was an option of no homework the majority of people will not buy any crossword puzzles or anything like that. The majority of people will be playing call of duty and will be sitting all day doing nothing. People don't eat healthy in America. People will buy anything and eat anything that is instant like McDonald's or pizza. Homework makes you think and that's something your brain need. Without thinking there is no for a brain. Not thinking causes Alzheimer's disease. People who don't like homework are just lazy and think there's no need to it. As you start getting more and more teachers homework becomes more and more important because you have each teacher for about an hour a day and you have a few subjects to learn about. How can one hour a day of each subject help you learn every subject you need to learn. Only students call each other dumb, homework doesn't make someone dumb, judgmental people make each other dumb. Teachers will make you redo it because they know that you didn't try the first time. Its like taking a picture, if you don't try to look good in the first one then you will have to look better and take another picture. I don't know what school you go to but mot every school will give you detention or any academic catch up. I've been to multiple schools in different states and I was never made to redo it or been given detention or any academic catch up. Sports and clubs always need to come after school work. If they don't come after school work then you are just ignoring your responsibilities. School work is getting you ready for your future careers. If you want to be a lawyer you will have lots of reading and writing to do. If you want to be an expert in math then you will need to do lots of problems. Any career you get requires a lot of extra work. If you can't do one page of homework then how else will you do all the extra work in your future career. Home is supposed to help you remember for a few hours because school is the next day. It is the teachers job to constantly to remind you. The teacher does that by giving out homework. You get homework because your teacher can't be holding your hand all the time teaching you at home. You do forget 90% of the thing you learned within 24 hours if yiu don't review. For example in spanish clash if you learned pachuca, perro, ojo, pierna, ni"a, ni"o, juego, camisa, tarea, ma"ana, pegar, mirrar, or tu. You will forget 90% of theese words if you don't srudy them within one day. If you don't beileive me then try it.

In your first sentence you used the phrase: 'majority of people' this is an opinion and not a fact, it has not been proved and you have no evidence. You do not know how many people will play call of duty or sit around doing nothing because you have not met every student on this planet. Some people, myself for instance, absolutely hate gaming; they would much rather be writing, reading or being outside. Eating anything such as McDonald's or pizza has nothing to do with this debate so that point may be excused. Also if you think about it people think everyday in normal everyday issues, such as deciding what clothing to wear and deciding what to cook for dinner. I agree, may only student call each other dumb, but that's terrible don't you think? This is classed as verbal bullying and can bring students down just as badly as physical bullying. Many victims of verbal bullying are affected in very real ways. Verbal bullying can affect one's self image, and affect someone in emotional and psychological ways. This type of bullying can lead to low self-esteem, as well as depression and other problems. It can aggravate problems that a victim may already be experiencing at home or in other places. In some cases, verbal bullying can reach a point where the victim is so depressed, and wants to escape so badly, that he or she may turn to substance abuse or - in some extreme cases - suicide. In the end, words have a power all their own, and the realities of verbal bullying can have very physical consequences, even if the aggressor never lays a finger on the victim. It's nothing like taking a picture. Taking pictures is fun and more then likely they are taking the picture because they want to not because they have to. Homework is usually the other way around.

If students want to do homework because they enjoy it or because they have an aim in life, then let them. I just do not agree with homework being compulsory. It should be the students choice whether or not they want to spend their time doing time consuming work when they could be doing something they enjoy. In some cases homework can be stressful enough that it can make students drop out of school. This is because students spend too much time working instead of doing things that take their interest. Things I would rather do are drawing, playing football, riding my bike, or reading. Sometimes they push themselves to do more and finally they just quit school. The result of that is since they don't have any education they get less paying jobs, all because homework leaded to dropping out of school! Most students think homework is just plain out STUPID and it isn't needed. For example exponents (in maths) aren't needed because many say that they have never use the pointless stuff that they spent hours learning in school. So all of these things can lead to a child dropping out of school.

Researchers at Sydney University in Australia found that too much homework can often have the opposite effect on students. Instead of enhancing their intellect, they become bored and unhappy, leading to absolutely no academic advancement.

You say my first sentence is an opinion because I have no evidence and you also have no evidence proving your statement so that also makes what you said an opinion. Here is my evidence showing that the majority (97%) of students play video games.

Eating McDonald's or pizza does have something to do with this debate. In a earlier argument of yours you stated food that are good for your brain that take time to make, In America we like foods that can be made fast and taste good. Who likes to wait for their to get ready? No one does, we all want our food now and ready to eat.

Thinking of the same thing everyday doesn't help your brain. Its like lifting 10 pounds everyday. Nothing will change if you do the same thing over and over.
Obviously homework is not the main cause bullying. Many other reasons like insecurity problems are a cause of bullying. Students drop out of high school for other reasons besides of homework. Homework isn't a reason at all why students drop out. Students drop out because of choices they made like joining a gang or from where they come from.

This debate isn't meant for you to post personal things. What does what you like to do have anything to do with homework being compulsory? You say you learn things that are not useful like exponents. Exponents are actually important in many careers. For example, finance jobs, scientist, builders, engineers, and other jobs require exponents. Right now you might not think it is important but teachers won't give you homework for no reason. Homework is to help you remember what you learned that day and to get more practice. Practice makes perfect, without the practice(homework) how would you be doing on the test?
