I believe marijuana should be legalized. Please elucidate why you pose the current legal status should stand.

Marijuana is a harmful drug that kills and hurts people. Thank you!
Debate Round No. 1

Con is concise and says "Marijuana is a harmful drug that kills and hurts people. Thank you!" Please provide statistics with this claim in order to validate this. According to Professor Lester Grinspoon - professor emeritus at Harvard University Medical School - there has not been one recorded death directly attributed to marijuana usage.

However, there was a study done in 1976 conducted by Dr. Robert Heath at Tulane University in New Orleans. This famous study concluded smoking marijuana directly relates to neuro-degeneration. The methods of how Dr. Heath arrived at his conclusion was not released for six years after the study was completed and the results had propagated through the media. Dr. Heath has the monkey wear a gas mask and pumped the equivalent of 63 pure Columbian marijuana joints in a span of five minutes [1]. The St. John's ambulance guide says that neuro-degeneration will begin within five minutes of a lack of oxygen. It wasn't the marijuana that led to the degeneration, it was the lack of oxygen.

In addition, there has been several scientific reports concluding that marijuana leads to cancer. Dr. Donald Taskin - professor of medicine at UCLA - concluded that marijuana use alone is not responsible for any forms of cancer [2]. Coupled with harmful substances - such as alcohol, tobacco, or other illicit drugs - evidence of cancer may begin to form; not from marijuana usage alone.

Now, to challenge your baseless assertion that marijuana hurts people. If marijuana hurts people, why is that the government prescribes marijuana to patients suffering from chronic pain, patients who need assistance in stimulating their appetite, reduction in analgesia - or pain -, and hinders the development of tumours [3]? In sum, the reality seems to pose the exact opposite as you have posited - "Marijuana is a harmful drug that kills and hurts people. Thank you!"

The one assertion you have posited that I agree with is "Marijuana is a ... drug ...". The verisimilitude in this statement is true, but only time will tell exactly for 'how long' this will be true.

Thank you for your time,

Reasons for voting decision: Pro's arguments were clearly superior, directly addressing Con's and refuting them too. Pro's sources were excellent, too. Conduct to Pro for Con's two forfeited rounds.
