Mentally ill criminals (anything from manic depression to schizophrenia) who are not conscious of their actions when in a psychotic state are sent to prison for violent behaviour do they belong in that kind of facility or should they be in a psychiatric rehabilitation type facility?

I believe that they should be kept within a safe and contained area with mental health professionals rehabilitating them to a 'mentally healthy state' in order for them to have a functioning life instead of being locked up in a prison with untrained (within mental health) wardens caring for them which will most likely worsen their condition due to lack of appropriate care and being surrounded by actual criminals. Whereas if they were in a psychiatric unit they will have a positive rehabilitation in the sense that they are not blamed for what they did and it is understood that the criminal activity was beyond their control due to their illness thus they are not criminals.

Their minds are wired to be insane. The only way out is lobotomy which essentialy completely erases their personality and memories.

No use of rehabilitation for the mentally ill.
