I think that people allow their religion to factor into their religion way too much. Religion is a touchy subject, it offends a lot of people, but when you throw it into politics too, it just is too much.

i have more to say, but i will save it for upcoming arguments.

This is the first Devil's advocacy I have done. Should be interesting.

So notice first off that you said "should religion and politics" be separated. Not religion and state.

Religion is often times a persons #1 belief above anything else. Usually religion is a persons moral system or a substantial part of it. To stop someone from bringing their religious views into politics would be to stop for example about 90% of America from voting on issues.

Also you say, "Religion is a touchy subject, it offends a lot of people", sweet but really, what doesn't at this point? My own personal moral view that babies are not life until they are born and abortion is totally cool up to that point is rather offensive to many people. The view of many religious people of pro-life is usually less offensive.

Anyways what is your advocacy on this?

I get that alot of things offend people, but i have found that it really ends up being religion. and politics.

it, to me is not necessary to involve the two things. when people make a decision about what should be legal and illegal, the ask God, that's absolutley ridculous.

Okay line by line on your argument.

"I get that alot of things offend people, but i have found that it really ends up being religion. and politics. "

>>I fully agree that they both offend people. Them and many other things. However that is kind of turf. Politics offend because everyone has a different view of how the world should be or how their nation should be. Many people base that view off of their religion or take principles of their religion (which is occasionally their morals) and apply those to politics. So my two points on this are:

1. You haven't shown me that offending people is a bad thing. I believe every action you make in this world has the potential to offend someone. That does not make any action bad in itself.

2. Many people base their way of life, their morals off of their religion. To say that religion and politics must be separated would be to kick those people out of politics. I contest that these persons opinions are just as valid and as important as anyone else. After all some religions teach some pretty good morals.

"it, to me is not necessary to involve the two things."

>> To you it is not, but to others that is their way of life. To them it is.

"when people make a decision about what should be legal and illegal, the ask God, that's absolutely ridiculous"

>>Sure but three things.

1. Not all of politics is deciding what should be legal and illegal.

2. I contest that these people do not actually ask god but instead look into themselves and ask themselves what they feel deep down.

Having said this I can see nothing but a vote for myself and urge all voters to vote on the better debater.

i agree with you on your first point. offending people isn't bad, i do it all the time.

and for your second point, i never said that you should kick people out of politics. lets take a look at republicans for a moment, shall we. i know this is going to make someone mad but oh well. they let their religion, christian or whatever, decide how they feel about abortion and gay marriage. there are more but let's keep this short and sweet. i'm not saying democrats don't, i know they do, but not quite as much as republicans.

i don't think that letting God tell you how to feel is right. you should form your own opinions. almost everyone says that they agree with that statement, but how many of them actually use it in THEIR life.

i hope that was better for you.

"i don't think that letting God tell you how to feel is right. you should form your own opinions. almost everyone says that they agree with that statement, but how many of them actually use it in THEIR life."

>> Here is where our opinions differ. While I do not personally believe that people letting god tell them what to do is right it still happens. Thus to separate politics and religion would be to separate people from our political system. There religion in this will case is their belief. To not allow citizens to voice their beliefs in our political system, however influenced by religion they are, would be to defeat the point of democracy.

Also, you say "letting god tell you how to feel" as if this is the only way it happens. I contest your idea. Many people believe in a religion because it is in congruence with their own moral beliefs or philosophies. Their religion is simply a codified example of their own beliefs.

Finally. People do truly believe in a divine creator. People truly believe it is their duty under such a divine creator to save their fellow humans by not allowing them to make sins (child abortion). And if their is a divine creator I definitely agree it is their duty. One way or another however it is their personal opinion and to not allow them to express it is once again to defeat the point of our current democratic (federal constitutional republic) system.

Haha, debate.org isn't about who agrees. If you want to know who agrees with you you should create a poll. Debate.org is more about how well you can argue your point. It allows people to formulate thoughts on issues and decide their own points. But overall debate is simply an intellectual competition. Ideally judges should remain unbiased and vote for who they feel did the better job of convincing.

I would like to debate you again if you want to challenge me to something. Something that is more easy to find evidence on would be better though. Opinion debates are substantially more difficult.

This must be from a scientific study. Love the evidence.

People have every right to let religion lead their political opinion. Just because you don't believe what I believe doesn't make your opinion more right.
