My school, just like many others has a "racist" mascot. It is the Indian. At our school, we are not allowed to have anyone paint their face, wear a headdress, use their arm as a tomohawk in chants, have TeePees that players run through at football games, or even make signs saying "go indians!". It is not fair and all we want is to fully represent our mascot at our school that was created in 1945. Our mascot has been deminished to nothing and now we are just a school with two colors. Is this crossing the line and putting hard rerstrictions on the students, or are the students wrong and we should not represent our mascot because it is too "touchy" to some activist groups? I am all for going all out and celebrating our mascot, The Indian.

People... like my opponent... don't seem to understand this issue. It's too offensive to make a fool out of a certain kind of race/ethnicity through a mascot. That'd be like a school of mostly caucasians, having a mascot of an African American. It's just too sensitive an isssue to go and do. That kind of conduct isn't ESPECIALLY allowed regardless. This is labeled as inappropriate conduct, regardless of mascot. Unless my opponent could clarify, this should be heavily dropped. ("We are not allowed...") Again, it is too sensitive an issue to make fun of a specific race through a mascot. This would be very offensive to Native Americans of any school. ("Go Indians!" ...) Hard Restrictions? No, if they were... it'd result in The Indian going...

People, like my opponent, don't seem to understand the issue. The student body chose our mascot when the school opened as a figure we could celebrate and cheer on. We respect our mascot and want to represent our mascot to the fullest and are proud to be Indians. If we were in fact a "racist" school, our mascot would be something deroggatory toward them. We as a school love our mascot and cherish the Indian, which is why we want to celebrate the race at events. You are seeing this as a whole school putting down a race of peoples. When in fact, we are a whole school celebrating a race of people.

'The student body chose our mascot when the school opened as a figure we could celebrate and cheer on.' Were students able to do any of the things you mentioned around that time?
If someone in a costume of an African American is seen jumping around, doing flips, and whimsy movements, that is very plainly offensive. You're having someone run around with an oversized head of an Indian, as offensive as can be. Imagine you were a Native American, or a friend of your's with that descent saw it... how could that not strike offensive to them/you? You don't see Native Americans doing flips in the costume of a caucasian American?

You don't need all that flashy stuff to celebrate their race. Let the mascot do that. "Go Indians!"

http://aimggc.blogspot.com... If you read the comments on this page, you will see that most Native Americans are in fact, NOT OFFENDED by our mascot.
I never said our that our mascot would be "having someone run around with an oversized head of an Indian". That is racist and sterotypical toward Native Americans. Also, I fully believe that you are being offensive and racist by stereotyping African ameicans in your above counter-argument. The Washington Redskins I think is offensive, there have been numerous law suits againts the mascot and all have failed. My school is simply Indians, we celebrate and honor this race for bravery, courage, strength, and their love of nature.

Thank you for accepting my debate. Go Indians!!!!!!

I will make this quick:

* That was my point. Mascots are prone to do acrobatic, and spirited things to cheer on their team. That's what my opponent seems to agree on. Thus, one reason to vote the NEG.
* Nowhere have I been racist. I'm simply debating the topic. You've even agreed to how doing the things I listed is racist. I'm merely proving a point.
* Lastly, my opponent is a large hypocrite! The mascots are the same for my opponent's school, and the Major League team itself! Therefore, my opponent has again proved their team's mascot is offensive!
* Your welcome, Chaddyd23.
* I urge a Con Vote.

I'm part Native American, and I don't find any of the mascots offensive at all.

This whole debate was based on Pro's mascot... That's a very poor source.
