no. i think that schools should have a summer break, not go year round. more school, leads to more stress. scholls should have a summer break. also, all the work can get crazy!

I was reading Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers and it changed my mind on year round schools. Up until that point, I hadn't heard to many arguments supporting them, that were any good. Upon reading Gladwell's book, I came across some data that showed, children from disadvantaged backgrounds were tested before and after summer vacation to see how much knowledge they retained during summer vacation. The poor children showed a decline in detention and performed worse on tests when on Summer vacation. Children from more well off families were tested before and after Summer break as well and those children seemed to not only retain knowledge from the prior school year, but learn more.

Now one could argue that poor people are just stupid, and so they "ain't got no good learnin skillz" , but the children were also tested throughout the year. During the school year, poor children learned just as much as the well off children, but something happened during summer break to ruin that.

The more well off families put more of a value on education, and made their children continue their studies during Summer break, which is likely what allowed them to retain more knowledge. The poor children were generally not encouraged to keep up with their studies at all.

If we want to give poor kids the same fighting chance as more well of children, we need to make schools year round. I understand that my opponent may not like school, or maybe school stresses him out, but ultimately the more education he gets the better off him and his descendants will be, which will ultimately reduce the amount of stress he has in his adult life and his future children's whole lives.

My source is Outliers, but for easy referance here is an article that explains many if not all of the same details. http://kulturekritic.com...

Western society is a society based on meritocracy. For true a meritocracy, we should enact schooling year round.
