@Taylur

Your point would stand if it was possible for every student in a class to attain a good grade. When you consider that teachers must conform grades in their classes to a strict bell curve, then you can see that this is not possible. Teachers that do not keep their class averages relatively low ( i.e. in my high school no class was able to have an avg of over 80) usually do not stay teaching for long.

Since the creator of this debate didn't properly define what a "good grade" was, I assume it means being in a high percentile of the class's average. If we assume that the top 5% of students in a class is what you could consider as having a high enough standing to merit a monetary award, then the costs would be greatly reduced in comparison to your calculations. With a simple calculation, you can see that the total cost of such a program would amount to approximately $12 million. This is a small price to pay in taxes that would benefit society greatly.

Although the incentive may be a good motivator for the children and could even boost their grades, paying every child is extremely impractical -- where do you propose we get the money from?

In January 2012, there were roughly 8.2 million students in the UK [1]; what would happen if every student received a good grade? How much money is a large enough incentive per every good grade? What if every child receives a good grade in EVERY subject?

Let's suppose every child is paid "30 ($50) for each good grade, and that every child gets just a single good grade in their academic lifetime. "30 x 8.2 million = "246,000,000 ($409,294,800) -- half a billion US dollars. And let's not forget that children that succeed are very likely to succeed in other subjects as well -- the costs will be well into the billions; perhaps trillions.

And finally, is "30 ($50) even a large enough incentive for children to spend hours and hours putting in the work to receive a good grade? I'm afraid the costs are extraordinarily expensive; taxes will go through the roof.
