I think they should not because if they love the sport, they should not be stopped by their schoolwork. Of course they need to work harder, but they should not get their privileges taken away just because they aren't as intelligent. They should be required tutoring and extra credit rather than sports taken away.

Students on sports teams shouldnt have to maintain a near-perfect GPA that is unreasonably high, but at the same time they should have to be held to perform well academically since there is a massive problem with intelligence and people who play sports in this country

"CNN analysis: Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th-graders"

http://www.cnn.com...

Requiring athletes to have a passing grade clearly isnt enough of a requirement to enforce, since many of them end up attending college, top-level colleges too, with reading-skills of a middle school level or worse.

It is for this reason that students on sports teams should be required to maintain a high GPA to be on the team, because requiring them to have a passing GPA clearly isnt enough.

I think imabench is right. People need to be smart. Sports may be viewed as a reward for a high grade point average.

Reasons for voting decision: "River Doo doo doo Doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo Whoa"... Sorry about that, got distracted. Anyway, the forfeit gives Pro conduct. He has the only source in the round, and given that it's CNN, it's reliable. His arguments are also much more solid and convincing. It's sad, really, because this is an interesting topic for debate. At some point it's something I'd like to engage with.
