Fear breads contempt NOT respect. The way to breed students who want to be in school is to awaken their creativity. What is crazy is that most states that allow this are calling themselves "Christian". The Church, of all things, will often push for the hitting of students in schools. Jesus Christ was a Teacher and a Leader, NOT a PUNISHER. He had DISCIPLES not SOLDIERS MARCHING TO WAR.

Discipline is often necessary when teaching children. The possibility of punishment makes students less likely to misbehave and therefore offer respect to the teacher. The hitting of students should not be unfounded, rather as a possible punishment for misconduct. This should not "breed contempt", as much like other consequences such as writing lines, suspension, or being sent home, it is done because of a negative action that the student committed.

If students misbehave, punishment should occur in order to teach them that their conduct was wrong. Hitting them is just another way they are punished for their wrongdoing. Within the realms of certain rules, such as no lasting marks made by the hitting, only allowing the use of a ruler or similar material, etc, hitting students should not be an issue.

Christian churches may or may not promote this issue. However, as the topic is "should teachers be allowed to hit students" and not "should Christian churches promote teachers hitting students", this point is irrelevant. Religion should not have to do with the morality of this issue.

Since my opponent has neglected to post a reply, I will simply restate my points.

1) The hitting of children by teachers should be allowed as a drastic punishment for children. If not misused, this method helps children learn the difference between right and wrong. The possibility of receiving the punishment makes them behave. Much like how a mother spanks her child when he/she misbehaves, hitting is done with the intent of teaching a lesson, not to cause unfounded pain.

2) Hitting children should be a punishment, therefore should not be unfounded. If a child commits a drastic crime such that regular punishments are not enough, hitting should be a possible alternative. As previously stated, it is the consequence of something a student has done wrong, not baseless abuse.

3) There should be some boundaries as to the definition of hitting. Hitting should not leave lasting marks, and should only be done with something similar to a ruler. If a teacher abuses this allowance, they would face consequences.

For the reasons stated above, I believe that teachers should be allowed to hit students, provided they follow some guidelines, as previously stated.
