The current state of the United States is an advantage to the government. But is it an advantage to the people? Republicans claim to be 'liberal', but they very much are and support extreme conservatism. While they do support liberal values as well, the United States is overrun by capitalists who legally extortionate the low and even middle income. Poverty and homelessness ever so grows become of the promotion of conservatives and capitalists. Because of our conservatism, we consume over 24% of global energy despite the fact we only make up 5% of the worlds population. I think Democrats are good for the current state. They support a social democracy, and have some great liberal values.

The current state of the United States results from three things: voter apathy, voter ignorance, and bipartisan shenanigans. The Republicans are less to blame then the Tea Party who only exist because the voters easiest to get motivated are the fringe and the guileless. And the Tea Party only got the power it did because Democrat representatives lack anything like a backbone and allow all kinds of things to occur. Worst both parties are given to spouting off biased or inaccurate information if they think it will make them look good to their constituents.

As for Capitalism and the Economy - part of the reason for the recent Recession was the repeal of regulations and oversight by the Bush administration. However, the Housing Bubble that was tied into the junk bond bubble was partly a result of things the Clinton administration put into play. On top of which Obama's terms in office have seen the continuance of a lot of very poorly thought out economic policies as well as a very weak attempt at adding some government oversight to Wall Street.

As for energy consumption... context always matters. For instance, most of the world's population lies in India, China, and Africa. The pollution index is off the charts - and their rate of consumption is growing exponential as their economies change and grow. On top of which, you have to consider things like how the Ganges (one of the most important water sources in the world) is treated as a running garbage dump or how rampant the usage of greenhouse gas producing materials is.

You also have to consider things like how Brazilians burn down millions of acres of rain-forest down while still consuming less then the average American. Finally you have to recall that even as we consume we are yielding things like sustainable crops, renewable fuels, more efficient filters and techniques. Remember that production requires consumption, and also that America is resource rich in nature.

Finally the point should be made that liberal and conservative are worthless terms without context and understanding. In and of it's self the word liberal simply means "to allow without much restraint" and the word conservative means "an attitude geared toward caution". And neither of those are bad things - in fact we need to be more conservative in how we approach things. Right now young men trying to attend college are having their rights to due process trampled on by liberal hysteria led by the Democrats. Right now it is considered fine to presume a man guilty of rape until proven innocent - and that is a violation of the Bill of Rights. A violation of the very heart of what it means to be American.

Besides which the Democrats are considered decent now, but not too long ago they were known as Dixie-crats and African-Americans voted Republican year after year. Right now African-Americans vote Democrat, but sometime soon maybe they won't vote for either. Because Republicans representatives are racist and Democrat representatives only care when it's election time: otherwise they get thrown under the bush by everyone including the President. And so it goes for Hispanics and women and I don't think either groups cares anything about Asians or Native Americans.

And honestly they don't have to care, because they have people tripping over themselves to pick a "team": blue or red. And once a person picks a team they don't bother to think - they just repeat the same tired lines and insults over and over again. "Conservatives are greedy and racist and stupid." "Liberals are idiotic bleeding heart commies who hate Jesus." "Bush ruined everything!" "Obama is ruining everything!" "Stop watching FOX News!" "MSNBC is liberal agenda nonsense!"
And so forth and so on - all while the senate and congress pass laws to pay themselves more or give their families more benefits or prevent any sort of persecution of themselves for crimes.

So yeah, neither group is too decent and both need some serious culling of the crooks in their flocks. That said a decent stop-gap measure would be having at least one or two more political parties. Things seemed a bit more decent when at the least we had the Whigs or the Progressives to makes the Dems and Republicans sweat it out. As it stands now however I wouldn't trust the greater majority of them anywhere near as far as I could throw them - and letting either have sole power would be a massive mistake. The Republicans are self-centered and selfish, but the Democrats are Self-Righteous and I'm more afraid of a Knight Templar then I am of a simple crook.
