Hello there,

Just a point of clarification, the title of this is, "Should the United States lower its drinking age from 21 to 18?" You then proceeded to take the Con position, which seems to indicate you think the answer should be no, and yet you say explicitly that they SHOULD lower the drinking age.

Due to this, I will be contending that the drinking age in the U.S. should remain as it is today, by refuting your arguments for lowering it.

Rebuttal:

You said:

"drinking age in most of con tries are 18 why us is 21."

Alcohol consumption is not simply an individual's decision to live with, but it can have far reaching implications for an entire society. If someone is deemed not responsible enough to be engaging in behavior that includes these kinds of implications than legislation of laws to prohibit such behavior may be warranted as I believe it is in this case.

You said:

"The teenagers will be mature when they are 18."

This is merely your opinion, which contradicts scientific facts. The Prefrontal Cortex, the portion of your brain largely associated with reasoning and judgement is not nearly as developed in an 18 year old, as it would be in a 21 year old or older.[1] Due to these kinds of scientifically verifiable observations that we can make about the rationalizing capacities of teenagers, it would not be beneficial to a society to permit individuals inhibited developmentally to engage in socially destructive behavior.

For instance in 2008, there were 5,000 deaths and 190,000 injuries related to alcohol consumption prior to the age of 21.[2]

Conclusion:

Arguing that the U.S. should pass laws (on a state level mind you) to lower the legal age for alcohol consumption because other countries are doing it, is an ill-founded conclusion. It ignores the scientific evidence that demonstrates the significance of the maturing and decision-making capacities of an 18 year old versus a 21 year old. In addition, it does not take into account the demonstrated dangers of under age alcohol consumption for a society.

Kind Regards,
TrueScotsman
