The topic is ... Should there be a tax on unhealthy food items and soda in the US

I will be arguing that there should be a "fat tax" or a tax on unhealthy food item.

The challenger will be arguing the opposite, that there shouldn't be a "fat tax."

In each round just provide evidence and if you want a rebuttal argument. Thanks!

I accept.

The government should not place a tax on unhealthy foods because it gives unnecessary power to the government on a subjective matter.

Not only does this allow the government to influence our choices, but it also violates our freedom to be able to fairly choose what we want to do with our bodies.

In addition, once the government has the power to highly tax unhealthy foods, why shouldn’t the government tax anything that they don’t deem “healthy” for citizens?

Lastly, by taxing unhealthy foods you deter citizens from businesses, causing certain businesses to fail without any fault of their own thus making money circulation go down and unemployment go up.

In this economy, such a thing may be detrimental and it gives unnecessary power to the government.
