We should not allow researchers to continue creating designer babies because to many religious people they are going against the works of god by creating a "fake" child. Religious people believe that by changing the unborn child's genes you're taking away the unborn babies individuality. I believe that we will be creating a gap in society because not only can only rich people afford this procedure but we are also creating a possibility of damaging the gene pool. We can take away diseases but that is the only good thing coming out of this, but even then we don't have a 100% chance of knowing the procedure will work.

If a child's death can be averted through genetic manipulation then is it not worth it to save that child? Is a religious belief of a parent worth the life of the child? Here is an expert on the subject's take on it, "your decent looking at most, maybe a 5/10 if you really want to get someone into bed. Get off your butt and get some plastic surgery on those flat hills, or become a lesbian. Either one works. Please follow my teachings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" This madman could be the person taking of your embryo, but most likely it will be a trained official who will know what to do and will be able to prevent disease, or even improve things like height or musculature.

I understand what you're saying but even if you can save a child's future by taking away their diseases, you won't have a 100% chance of working. The procedure could go wrong and instead of fixing the problem you would complicate the problem. I am not a religious person but I still wouldn't do this procedure if I had a child because of the fact that there is no guarantee that the procedure would work. I wouldn't want to endanger the unborn child more than it already is.

It is better to take a chance at healing the baby or preventing the diseases. If a human is given a chance to save themselves they will always take it. It is a part of human nature to save yourself any way possible. It has a success rate high enough that it is more help than risk.

Actually there are many religions against designer babies...for example Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Protestants, Episcopalians, and Southern Baptists. Catholics, like Pope Francis, have compared designer babies to the topic of abortion. Orthodox Christian churches teach that each embryo is a 'full person', if any of these embryos are willfully destroyed, that act is tantamount to the destruction of a person. Protestants believe that life begins at conception. Episcopalians ask the question "can we, who claim to be people of faith, be tempted to believe that our belief in God as creator, redeemer, and sustained gets replaced by our control and thus make idols of ourselves and our power?" Finally the Southern Baptists compared designer babies to the Nazis program for bio-engineering.

Reasons for voting decision: Neither side provided sources to back up their claims. Con's argument is that religious belief is against designer children and that these children lose individuality. Pro's argument is that none of that is as important as the baby's life and that designer babies have a higher chance of living than they do from dying. Neither posted sources so I can only presume that this assertion is the case. Convincing argument point to Pro.
