I believe that we should develop algae based fuels because then the subsidies for oil companies will cease.

I accept this debate.

To start, I'm obviously taking Con. I believe that there are too many good sources of energy to invest in that is better than Algae Fuel. If we are going to invest in new Sources of Energy, Algae simply doesn't match up to the standard we should be setting.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

For my first argument, I bring up the cost.

Algae based fuels so far cost almost $33 a gallon(a). The cost can be brought down to $3.50, but that is the minimum. Oil and Gas can decrease greatly in cost if we put pressure on the companies, but Algae fuel can't go below $3.50 (the worth of $150 a barrel of oil.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Although Oil and Gas will not last forever, they are not as close to ending as we think. According to the World Meter, there are still...(a)

40 years until the end of Oil (wait for it...)
165 years until the end of Gas (hold on....)
415 years until the end of Coal.

a) http://www.worldometers.info...

While these factors do not include rising populations, they also do not include the massive reserve of unknown Coal, Oil, and Gas we have let to find, or the UN's assumption that the population could start decreasing (or slow done) before 50 years(b).

b) http://www.un.org...

This also does not factor in how much longer the fuel could last if we increased our Engines fuel efficiency. Right now, they believe the current Fuel Efficiency of an average engine to be around 20% - 25%. At 100%, Oil alone could last 100 years, with Gas and Coal lasting 300 years and 500 years respectively.

Hybrids using Gas may even get over 100 mpg within the decade.(c) If we started using hybrids at 100% Fuel Efficiency, we could last multiple hundred's of years on our current supply of Oil and Gas.

c) http://auto.howstuffworks.com...

Instead of focusing on Alternative Fuels, we need to focus on efficient engines.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Another major issue with Algae Fuel is the environment. While it's grown indoors right now, the buildings required to produce the fuel for most the Population would be extreme. Too many less consuming options exist for fuel.

Algae could yield 5,000 to 10,000 gallons of fuel every square acre(a) every 10 days(b). At that rate, it would take up to 3,570,000 square acres of factory (as indoor ponds will be the norm) to replace Oil consumption alone. This is based on the estimated 3,570,000,000 gallons of Oil consumed everyday, or 35,700,000,000 Gallons every 10 days(c). The factories would actually be larger than that because the company needs to produce the consumption amount + surplus.

a) http://www.greentechmedia.com...
b) http://www.ask.com...
c) http://slipr.com...

Based on the World Meters numbers, The factories needed to replace Gasoline would add another 798,000 square acres, and 1,210,000 square acres to replace Coal(d).

d) http://www.worldometers.info...

At that rate, it would take almost 180% of all the land in the State of Connecticut to produce that amount of algae. The saddest part is that that's at Maximum production (10,000 gallons per square acre). The estimates could raise as high as double that amount of land (11.15 Million square acres.)

Imagine if the Population doesn't slow down...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pro says that producing the fuel would stop subsidies to Oil companies. He (his name says Girl, but the profile says male) fails to understand the biggest problem with this...

Oil Companies don't want oil, they want money... If we build more opportunity in Algae Fuel as being the major fuel source, they will likely pick it up. You don't stop them from getting money, they will just produce both Oil and Algae Fuels.

If they do not, then you just replace the Oil Companies with Algae Fuel companies who will be no different. Just because the companies product is more 'Eco-friendly' does not mean they will be a better company.

The only way to stop Fuel Companies from making so much is to increase Fuel Efficiency, which can still increase 400-500% of where they are now (from 20-25% to 100%.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

With this, I end my first Argument that Algae fuels simply is not the Alternative Energy we should be investing in. We have more time to find new, better sources of clean energy than people think. This becomes ever the case if we invested in more efficient engines that run on 50% - 100% Fuel Efficiency.

I now pass it on to the Pro.

That's unfortunate. He wasn't online in time. Go easy on him guys, he probably didn't understand/think about the Round Time limit. It was his first Debate.

I'll gladly do a second debate with the Pro if he wants.

I extend my Arguments.
