I think that letting them on the roof of a building allows them to truley feel like their an airoplane and if they want to crash by jumping off let it happen. A crying retard keeps me up all night so let them fly and not cry at all.

I thank broster123 for instigating this debate.

Firstly, let’s get an idea of what retarded means:

Retarded - (Psychology) underdeveloped, esp mentally and esp having an IQ of 70 to 85 [3].

A1: Some mentally ill people are not able to make rational decision for themselves

According to U.K law passed in 2005, The Mental Capacity Act is a framework which is designed to empower and protect vulnerable people who are not able to make their own decisions. It explicitly states who is allowed to make their decisions, so as to prevent the mentally ill from harming themselves [1].

Why does this statutory framework exist? It’s to help people who are not stable in mind, who can’t make decisions for themselves, get through life in the best way possible. It is also quite sad to think that people can cause such harm to themselves (i.e. letting someone jump off a building and kill his/herself is tough to think about).

A2: Some mentally ill people choose not to get help when they need it

According to world-schizophrenia.org, some mentally ill people (as an example, schizophrenics) do not get help, and that contributes to them doing things that they deeply regret [2].

According to webmd, autism can badly hurt families, in that parents have lower expectations than what the child is capable of, are worried about a child’s autism effects, and even worried about an autistic’s child’s social life. If the child isn’t able to get help, the amount of stress this puts on the family, and the child itself, is deeply troubling [5].

Mentally ill people not getting help hurts families, communities and the person themselves [4]. Harsh introspective questions, like ‘was it my fault he/she committed suicide?’- and ‘could I have done more?’- arise, and are brutal and devastating to deal with. Knowing that the person chose not to get help, and you did nothing to try and help him/her, devours your mind.

CA1: Letting someone jump off a roof can cause all kinds of problems for a society

Even professionals who deal with mental health issues in their jobs can suffer greatly from suicide [4]. Can you imagine the effect on the average person in society? What if someone were to see this person jump off the roof? What about a little child? A child watching someone fall to his/her death, and the watching the impact of the body on the ground. What about the loved ones of the person killing his/herself? I’ve already referenced the impacts. Children struggle to cope with suicide, and always ask a lot of question, to which the answers may break them [6].

It’s really quite heartless to talk of suicide like this. For those of you without a heart, suicide has an enormously negative impact on society, families, significant others and the individual, which would probably hurt the economy somehow. But in all seriousness, suicide should never be encouraged, due to its potent, grating consequences.

Reasons for voting decision: Disappointing when someone cites well and puts effort into a debate only to have the opponent forfeit, so conduct points awarded. Spelling and grammar strong, convincing and justified arguments, made good use of sources.
