I will argue that silly debates are good.

1. They can provide a good laugh. For example, take 9spaceking's debate with isakid: "Are bacon and eggs delicious?"

In round 1, 9spaceking trolls, and it is hilarious.

2. They are good because we need them because they add variety to DDO. There are more than 50,000 debates on DDO, and less than 500 of them are in the funny section. That is less than %1. If we need more of them because they add variety to DDO, then they are good.

I will argue in favor of serious debates. I was able to look at the silly debate you mentioned [1] and found no humour in it. You must recall that different types of humour are more interesting to different people. Whereas this seems to use randomness and the art of surprise to convince people to laugh, I prefer sarcasm, intelligent jokes, or witticisms. So, humour over this website is not equally funny to all people. What if people prefer slapstick or fart jokes? You can't use physical humour, or pass a fart through the monitor so the people with this preffered humour would be left out.

Debate.org is entertaining to many people not for it's humour, but for the clash of ideas that appear here. "Debate.org is a free online community where intelligent minds from around the world come to debate online and read the opinions of others. Research today’s most controversial debate topics and cast your vote on our opinion polls."
This is on the top of the home page of this sight. [2]

Also, you presume that this sight doesn't have variety because a single portion of it is smaller than the rest. Why is funny more important than any of the other subjects people debate on? As I write this, there are 356 debates under the category of 'funny,' TV , Places and Travel, Music, movies, and cars have less than this. How does funny add more variety than these do?

1. "What if people prefer slapstick or fart jokes? You can't use physical humour, or pass a fart through the monitor so the people with this preffered humour would be left out."

There is still a way to get that kind of humor in a debate on DDO, and that is by posting Youtube videos in an argument.

2. 'Debate.org is a free online community where intelligent minds from around the world come to debate online and read the opinions of others.'

It takes an intelligent mind to win any debate, even if it is silly. Here are some funny debates that apparently required intellect to win, no matter who won them:

3. "Also, you presume that this sight doesn't have variety because a single portion of it is smaller than the rest."

Actually, I just think this site needs more funny debates.

3.1 "Why is funny more important than any of the other subjects people debate on?"

I was not saying it was. I am simply saying it is good.

3.2 "How does funny add more variety than these do?"

That does not make them bad.

Thank you for those further points, and I apologize for failing to notice I misspelled preferred and wrote sight instead of site. I guess it was oversight.

I suppose you can pass on images through youtube, 'fart jokes' will probably lose something in translation (the smell of course), but I suppose you are correct about slapstick. Three stooges has been shown on screens for many years, and the quality of it has not weakened by it being on screen. That is the only part I will concede on.

"It takes an intelligent mind to win any debate, even if it is silly."
If the debate's topic is based off non-sense, non-sense is what is needed for victory. So, although an intelligent mind could be used in a nonsensical debate, it is not necessary. [1]
Intelligence is "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills."
Intelligent is "having or showing intelligence, especially of a high level."
This would mean that you have to use skills and previous knowledge to win, nonsense is completely random, so if you check back to the first comic you use as an example [2] does not actually use any common sense and a severe lack of knowledge of the general properties of bacon, eggs or tigers that he uses in his argument. So this statement is made false by your own example. Providing other examples of it being true in some cases does not create truth in all cases.

"They are good because we need them because they add variety to DDO" in your first sentence is why I provided the link to the home page of this site. You ignored the purpose of the site is debating, not for humour and jokes. Yes, people can seriously debate on joke subjects, but the site doesn't "need" them at all. It's a nice addition, but it isn't crucial to the existence of this site.

Lastly, the part I added about other under-used categories is you stressed variety and stated that it needed more in the funny category because it had less than 1%. I suppose I jumped to conclusions and assumed you added this because you support jokes for variety rather than personal enjoyment. It seems that you only support jokes for your personal enjoyment rather than the variety in which you seemed to have stressed in the final paragraph of your first statement. The final sentence was hard to read and I assumed it translated to "We need more jokes because they add variety, and if it adds variety, then it is good."

I figured the opposite of Silly debate was serious debate, so I decided that these should be of higher importance than silly debates, and that 'funny' wasn't all that important. Glad I did it this way though, maybe I unknowingly took the easy road, but proving silly debate's are 'bad' seems difficult to get a strong argument from. I'd have to find some moral rule that proves that aren't good. So to actually counter my opponents argument, I guess I am attempting to portray silly debates as unnecessary or even pointless to this site. Maybe it wasn't the best idea starting with humor of different types as an argument and appealing to the people, but I think I'm doing pretty well.

Con should argue that silly debates are bad. Or it wouldn't be con; it would be Pro for a different issue. But then again, who cares :P

It's alright. If I hadn't caught it, I'd feel embarrassed but I'd still like people to point it out to me.
