Smoking is a public health nuisance and should be banned outright. Not just in public places but everywhere. When used as directed, it kills.

Smoking is a public health nuisance just like drinking, fast food, a lack of sports in exchange for extended tv-watching, etc. Although it does not "kill" instantly it undoubtedly causes a higher risk for impaired health and premature death amongst others.

I admit: There is one main difference. Smoking does also affect other peoples well-being or even their health. For this reason it is banned in many public places, especially in the United States. Since I am a non-smoker, I enjoy this ban and agree with it.

However, if somebody alone at his home decides to smoke, it is his personal matter. A ban would certainly be inadequate and disproportionate.

Hi Nimrod. Thank you for taking the time to debate this important topic. Just so we're clear, you are agreeing with banning smoking in public places ? But you believe that banning smoking in the home is a bit excessive ? If so, I will just address the private property issues. Look forward to a good debate.

You have a great point Phil. Smoking SHOULD be illegal. But the lobbies and the smoking public are making it difficult and the government doesn't want another Prohibition situation (which didn't work). So they try to get people to quit by charging such high taxes to make it too expensive and limit it's acceptable places to smoke.

As far as your grandparents and smoking additives comment, your grandparents never had a chance...back then they didn't know about it's addictive nature and health issues. By the time they did, the tobacco companies put all the additives in that made it near impossible to quit when they wanted to.

As far as tobacco itself being harmless and the additives making it poisonous, that's an interesting angle. Any proof to back that up ?

If smoking is so bad, then it should be made illegal. What's so hypocritical is that the government, just like it does with the oil industry, depends on the outrageous taxes it places on a LEGAL product. I've lost two grandparents to smoking, and don't blame anyone but my grandparents. They knew it was bad for them, but they enjoyed it, and chose to use the product.

If I could implement policy, I would personally outlaw all of the additives and poisons manufacturers put in cigarettes. That's the real nasty stuff. Tobacco by itself is harmless. The chief of staff of John Muir hospital once explained that prior to the 1960's he'd never seen a case of tobacco related cancer. Once the companies started putting poisons in the product, the cancer cased started appearing.
