Social Media - A Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

Yes. The reason I think social media is good for kids is because it shows ways to express themselves, and is a good way for communication. Social media has made it possible for like minded individuals to discuss important topics, widen their personal knowledge and discover things they never knew before. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others are a cost effective means of spreading the word and getting support. You might find your old pals from school or college who were out of touch.

Social Media has done more harm than good, an example would be catfishing, a method used by kidnappers to kidnap people by contacting them online; informing them to come to a certain place where they are then kidnapped.

Catfishers also make their profile picture an attractive man/woman in an attempt to lure people to their doom.

If you look at it that way, it can be proven bad. However you could be cautious and if you ever are indeed asked to meet, you could meet in a public place, with a lot of people until you trust them. You could also not tell anyone private information(phone number, email, etc.) Most social media sites, you can put yourself in an private mode where you have to accept your followers. You can follow whoever you wish to otherwise.

The problem is, some catfishers target children (who normally believe the person they are talking to is real) and end up getting kidnapped. They were simply not taught to be cautious or were taught but didn't follow orders.

However, kids can also be kidnapped if you walk to school. The world is not a safe place. Anywhere you go, there are unsafe things people can convince you to do. Social media is just one thing. It doesn't address the whole problem. Also, in that sense, letters are bad. You can write a letter and put it in their mailbox.

Social media is a great way to express yourself.

Pretty depressing way to express yourself, in addition to that Facebook has become the leading cause of divorce. Kids can meet up in real life, get some sun and not stay in the house all day. They could also meet up at school or talk on the phone.

(The phone is not social media as social media are websites where people meet and share things.)
