With the progression of technology, use of natural resources, business driven societies, and warfare, we are in for the worst.

We as a human race are slaves to our wants. This need to have more stuff in turn drives the need for more consumption of resources, this consumption of resources leads to war, war leads to the development of bigger weapons, bigger weapons leads to the universal destruction of mankind as we know it.

Good Morning.

For my preliminary argument, I will say that anarchy (the alternative to societies) would destroy the human race much faster than societies are capable of doing, and furthermore if the human race is so depraved, why have we not collapsed long before now?

You talk about a "weapons chain" that will lead to the earth's destruction. Yes, many people once thought this way about the atomic bomb and its kin, but to be frank, it hasn't happened in the sixty years that we've had the bomb, and I doubt it will happen in the future.

Your thinking is stuck in the Cold War era. For there to be a conflict with the use of bombs, there must be an aggressor. The Soviets were the closest it came but they are destroyed. The US is threatened by terrorism, but they are just fleas biting the vast bulk of a bear.

"We humans are slaves to our wants"
Not true. Humanity has in many instances over the course of human history transcended its appetites to achieve forward progress. If this had not happened , man would not be the civilized, intellectual race we are today (for the most part.)

There can be no doubt that we consume resources. However, the earth is enormous and though it might change and a resource will become scarce, another will rise in its place. Or, alternatively, humanity will transcend its appetites and devise an alternative without even a war or a famine, such as the alternative fuel-advocates want right now. Those who don't listen to them are not slaves to their wants, they just don't have the big picture.

Humanity is not slave to its appetites. We have achieved much over the course of our history, none of which would have been possible if your view was in fact the truth.

Arg. I was looking forward to this. Wise One, I don't hold it against you. I know how things can get.

Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to reply if you choose to make your next argument with little time to spare. I'm leaving Saturday morning, and I won't be back for a while.

Voters, if neither of us responds, I suggest you judge from what you saw in the first arguments.

Thanks, and I'm sorry.

Good luck, Wise One.

Disappointing had i been WiseOne i would have hammered you on your point about anarchy being the most destructive thing for humanity. Had i been SolaGratia i would have forced him to more narrowly define society, and seperate 'government' from that definition. Forcing him to lay blame on government not society.
