Pro

I strongly affirm that the television show, South Park is a better show than Family Guy.

First Contention: south Park is has more episodes and seasons than family guy. family guy is currently showing the 8th season while southpark is showing the 13th. south park is able to use current events and turn them into a parody therefor more teenagers and adults watch the show. the seasons may not end because south park makes fun of current events. examples of this would be the episode about last night, which makes fun of the obama election, or the new episode on wrestling. that makes fun of WWE.

Second Contention: there are more viewers for south park than family guy. because more people watch south park, more people talk about it. i just recently started watching south park because almost everyone in my school talks about it.

third contention: south park has more games and movies than family guy. south park can be played on the iphone, xbox 360 and much more. because south park can be played on more than just the t.v. and computer there are more viewers.

Con

I would like to begin by thanking my opponent for starting this debate. There isn't a whole lot to discuss so I will dissect brettg951's three contentions.

*Case Con- Rebuttals*

Contention 1: "south Park is has more episodes and seasons than family guy."

This assertion is completely irrelevant and therefore the conclusion that my opponent draws from it is a non sequitur. [1] The fact that South Park has more episodes than Family Guy does not make it a better show. A television show could have lots of episodes and they could all suck.

"south park is able to use current events and turn them into a parody therefor more teenagers and adults watch the show."

Family Guy can do the exact same thing in its shows and therefore this point is irrelevant.

Contention 2: "there are more viewers for south park than family guy."

This assertion is completely irrelevant to the resolution. It's simply an appeal to the crowd. [2] The fact that South Park has more viewers than Family Guy does not mean that it's better.

Contention 3: "south park has more games and movies than family guy."

Like my opponents first contention, this assertion is also irrelevant. South Park may have more movies or games than Family Guy, but this does nothing to show why South Park is a better television show than Family Guy. Even if we were to include movies and games as relevant, the fact that South Park has more games does not show that these games are better than those of Family Guy. South Park could have lots of terrible games while Family Guy could have only one or two good ones.

=========
Conclusion
=========

The burden of proof is on my opponent to show why South Park is better than Family Guy. [3] And it should be obvious that he has not fulfilled this burden. All three of his contentions are palpably fallacious. Therefore, the vote should be obvious. (Vote Pro)

Isnt it sad how they have made television shows that both a 14 and 40 year old can enjoy?? talk about injustice. thats just sick.

The debate was kinda sucky & I'd have to side with con because he at least followed a sensible & logical line of reasoning, even though I think South Park is a better show. FG has a template that it follows rigorously whereas SP does not. This is different from a running gag like killing Kenny in SP which isn't always done and is by no means an indispensable part to the show, as opposed to the "tangents" that FG uses which are very important to the show but are sometimes not very funny. They both try to shock the audience a lot, though I feel that FG tries a little harder to be shocking than SP. I guess it's because FG is on network tv & the sensors are stricter so it's more of a challenge.

I think that The Simpson's is better than both because the episodes are even more diverse. TS has more cerebral humor and better writing than both shows. I would rate them in this order: TS, SP, FG. Although, I think they are all fine shows worthy of being on prime time.

C: Tie
S/G: Con - Pro, if you have the ability to capitalize your contentions, please also apply that to the beginnings of sentences =D
A: Pro - Mongeese was exactly right in his original RFD. Con gave the reader no reason to believe that these two shows are anything other than equal. As such, I must assume that the greater quantity of goods provided by South Park makes it superior.
S: Tie - Unless they are especially influential, I do not recognize definitions as sources.

I guess I worded the topic wrong. W.e. I'll hopefully start to get better at this.

There was one South Park episode that I found to be incredibly funny. Season 5 episode 12, Here Comes the Neighborhood[sic]. Can't find it on Youtube though :(

Family guy is funny in a Simpsons-for-dummies-my-eight-year-old-god-sister-can-fully-comprehend-it kind of way. I'd have to go for Family Guy!

"Creating conversation is good; ergo, because SP creates more conversation, SP is better than FG, all else equal."

Another example of an argument not put forth by the instigator, but which mongeese makes up himself and then somehow rationalizes to believe that Pro actually made the argument. Sigh... mongeese is an atrocious voter. S&G to Con for obvious reasons. Args to Con because Con proved all of Pro's args to be fallacious and Pro had the BoP, therefore Con wins.

PS- "Ergo" means "therefore" - so your statement is grammatically incorrect. "...therefore, because..."

Debate is based a certain amount of assumptions. One shouldn't have to point out every underlying assumption.

South Park creates discourse.
Discourse is good because it leads to the free exchange of ideas.
Exchanging ideas is good because it leads to progress.
Progress is good because it leads to new technologies which better the human race.
The human race is important because we are rational beings.
Only beings matter and not inanimate objects because objects don't feel pleasure or pain.

there's an endless amount of assumptions underlying any one statement.

For the record, though, I voted CON. PRO might have had the only arguments, but none were written in a way that remotely convinced my that South Park is better.

Creating conversation is good....

That wasn't an argument. It's something you extrapolated. Moreover, something isn't better than something else because it gets more people talking about it.

More people talk about Obama than Bush; that doesn't mean that Obama is a better president.

Your sources are sources to logical fallacies. I personally hate those. They're sources garbage fodder.

Actually, looking back, there was one thing PRO said that CON did not refute: "because more people watch south park, more people talk about it. i just recently started watching south park because almost everyone in my school talks about it."
Creating conversation is good; ergo, because SP creates more conversation, SP is better than FG, all else equal.
