After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, the issue of gun laws has been brought up. Most people think that making guns harder to get it will decrease the amount of shootings, homicides, robberies, and make an overall better society. I oppose this theory and stricter gun laws for a few reasons. First off, criminals break laws regardless of the consequences, hints the title of "criminal". Secondly, we have the right to bear arms (and yes I know everyone uses thing argument) America was founded on the principles of the Bill of Rights so what is America if we don't follow it? Third, guns don't kill people, people kill people (I know another very common argument). We don't have any control over people so most think the second best thing to do is control the guns, but as long as there are criminals, mentally unstable people, and maniacs there will always be violence.Taking away guns from the average person though is unlawful and not thought through enough because there are people that are responsible and have concealed and carry licenses that don't deserved to be punished due to one maniacs poor actions. In conclusion, guns aren't the problem, human behavior, which is something we have no control over, is the only thing that makes guns look bad by the misuse of them.

First of all, the calls for gun laws by the president should have come long before this massacre.

Making guns harder to get will decrease the amount of shootings, homicides and robberies. Look at other developed countries where gun ownership is not legal - the crime rates are far lower than the USA. A statistic that I found amazing is that 19.5:1 is the ratio of gun murders in the USA compared to the average of the rest of the developed world.

To your first reason: criminals find it easier to break the law and get away with it when they have guns which they can use in the act.
To your second reason: laws aren't always right. Guns are still legal in the US because it is in the Bill of Rights. If it was just another law then most people would see that it cause more vices than virtues. This is because many Americans are so patriotic that they never question the Bill of Rights. The law was necessary at the time of its inception due to the danger that some Americans were in. Nevertheless, laws can be wrong (no matter who they were written by) and laws can be made while only thinking about the present rather than the future too. Furthermore, people are greatly entitled to disagree with a law... even if it is in the Bill of Rights.
To your third reason: people use guns to kill people. Without guns they would be powerless. True you don't have complete control over people's intention but you can strongly influence it - persuasion, compromise, negotiation etc. You can certainly control their intentions by taking away their guns so they cannot kill anyone. There will always be homicidal psychopaths but a government can limit that by making more gun laws.

Taking away some body's firearms isn't a punishment - it is a safety procedure. Taking away the right to bear arms would further the right to life (which is a far more important liberty than owning a tool of death). Human behaviour can be very destructive but giving someone a gun will mean that the destruction will happen. If they don't have a gun then they can't cause destruction by shooting other people.

I said my piece. You are very confused and have a flawed thought process. After our debate on felons voting we can have a debate on guns.

JohnnyC you are "lost in the sauce". You, simply put, have no idea what you are talking about! Making it harder for law abiding citizens to get guns will NOT lower crime!!!

CHICAGO " Not a single gun shop can be found in this city because they are outlawed. Handguns were banned in Chicago for decades, too, until 2010, when the United States Supreme Court ruled that was going too far, leading city leaders to settle for restrictions some describe as the closest they could get legally to a ban without a ban. Despite a continuing legal fight, Illinois remains the only state in the nation with no provision to let private citizens carry guns in public.

And yet Chicago, a city with no civilian gun ranges and bans on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, finds itself laboring to stem a flood of gun violence that contributed to more than 500 homicides last year and at least 40 killings already in 2013, including a fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl!!!

And, about 3,600,000 home invasions occur every year in the US!! American families should not be hindered from their right to bear arms and defend themselves and their property! And 38% of assaults and 60% of rapes occur in home invasions! Sure, guns are very good at killing people, but they are also very good at defending yourself, your family, and your property! Ad don't even try to say, "That's what the Police are for". Unless they can teleport to my house in the blink of an eye, I want my gun. And watch how fast your ill informed opinion will change when someone breaks into your home and assaults you and/or your family.
