Over the last few years, surrogacy has entered our pop culture zeitgeist, with stars like Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker using surrogates to complete their families. But surrogacy remains one of the least talked about tools in the fight against infertility. Why do surrogates do what they do? What do they get out of it? And how hard is it to give a child to its parents after having it in your womb for 9 months? Is it normal to be or to have a surrogacy mother?

Con

Surrogacy is an option for those couples unable to conceive. However, there are some disadvantages. The intended parents do not have full control over how the surrogate's pregnancy is managed. The surrogate may not want to undergo certain tests or may prefer a birthing plan that is different from what the intended parents want. Furthermore, there is no way that the intended couple can monitor the surrogate's behavior 24/7. If she opts to drink, smoke or do drugs, despite agreeing not to as part of the contract, there isn't much the intended parents can do, especially if they aren't aware of it.

Actually controlling mother is possible. It is possible through contracts.Legal contracts are drawn up to cover all the expenses and expected duties of both parties in the agreement. A life insurance policy on the surrogate typically is purchased to cover the pregnancy period. An agency holds payments in trust for the surrogate mother, keeping the financial burden out of the personal relationship being formed between the surrogate and the couple. Lawyers make sure all the agreements follow state laws and that surrogates and couples remain in compliance with the terms of the contract throughout the process.

However contracts don't come up cheaply. Some couples simply cannot afford to go this route, which entails paying for IVF, doctor's visits and testing. The couple may also be required to pay travel costs for the surrogate, as well as a fee to the surrogate and sometimes to an agency.

This should have been a forum topic. In a debate, you need to take a stance, with your opponent being diametrically opposing. This needs to be clear at the start of the debate.

An interesting point about surrogacy in Ireland is that the genetic mothers name is not allowed to be put on the birth cert. Under our law the mother is the one who gives birth. I have never met anyone here who actually agrees with that statement in the case of surrogacy. In a recent law case a genetic mother failed to have her name on the birth cert for that reason. I believe it is being appealed to a higher court.

Reasons for voting decision: No clear resolution was presented. Pro/Con simply discussed the advantages and disadvantages of surrogacy with no cited evidence. I'm going to deduct conduct from Pro for not making a resolution and otherwise leave this "debate" tied. Pro, next time, please state a clear resolution.

Reasons for voting decision: PRO did not state a position, neither in the resolution nor in round #1. CON decided to define it as "surrogacy is good, PRO/CON". PRO then argued that surrogacy CAN be good, whereas CON argued that surrogacy is expensive, and thus bad. Given that PRO started a debate without outlining any clear objectives, I will hand arguments to CON.
