Personally speaking, I believe that it is true that Switzerland is by far the most efficient government on this planet, (call me biased). Sure, their elections may spark a fuse here and there, but the government and its people handle the situation in a mature manner. As opposed to their, American counterparts, they are ALWAYS hot about touchy issues, Such as race, abortion, gay marriage. I mean Look at Europe, and Asia, most of these nations have surpassed these issues decades before these thing were even discussed to the American ears. Plus, Switzerland has a direct democracy, which goes well with a population of about 7.5 million people ( direct democracy, meaning that the citizens vote on hot topics and the government has to consider what ever the results may be). Also, when it comes to elections, the people don't vote for candidates, they vote for a political party, and the Swiss parliament decides on which lucky 7 individuals will be appointed in to the group which is known as the Executive Council, which means, that means that instead of one individual having to take all the pressure and heat, the council can delegate a situation among themselves as a team. Go back into October of 2007. Cristoph Blocher, representative of the Swiss People's Party, Won a decent sum of the support of the Swiss people. One of the major issues he argued in his campaign was immigration. One key policy he had proposed, that if an immigrant were to commit a crime, they, along with their families, will have to be deported. Critics also said that the posters he had displayed for his campaign (posters contained pictures depicting white sheep kicking a black sheep off the Swiss flag) were racist, and he received harsh criticism world wide. It will eventually turn out that Blocher's Campaign would turn out successful. Two months later, after the elections, Blocher was ousted from parliament, by the Christian democrats and all that good stuff. The point is, that despite controversial topics such as immigrants, the Swiss remains calm and collective, allowing certain issues to unfold so it can be dealt with in a mellow atmosphere.

First, I will assume that the Resolution should read: "Switzerland is by far the most politically stable nation."

Political stability has nothing to do with protecting freedoms, allowing for change, etc. Political stability only means that the government is not at risk of collapsing, is able to maintain rule of law, can effectively maintain peaceful populace conditions, etc.

In order to win this debate, I must show that Switzerland is NOT the most politically stable nation. I will do this by comparing Switzerland to other countries that are MORE politically stable than Switzerland. If I can prove that any country is more stable than Switzerland, I win.

A. Vatican City is a country that is more stable than Switzerland.

1)Vatican City is recognized as a sovereign state under international law

2)Vatican City has an election process capable of effectively handling emergencies such as untimely death of leaders. The attempted assassination of John Paul II was handled effectively by Vatican City.

3)The pope is the last absolute monarch in Europe. The pope has power over every political aspect in Vatican City. This absolute control leads to political stability, as there are no battles over power or fighting over who has authority to do what. Any power disputes are settled by the ultimate political authority of the pope.

4)The legitimacy of the authority of the pope is never in question in Vatican City. Every citizen of Vatican City is a devout Catholic, most are clergy. Catholics believe that the pope is the highest spiritual authority after God and that the Holy Spirit guides the electoral process into picking a legitimate pope. Essentially the pope is seen as divinely appointed, thus the pope has absolute political control and absolute political legitimacy (in the eyes of the citizens of the country).

5)There have been no significant political upheavals since the Vatican City became an official country with the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929

6)The political life of Vatican City is virtually non-existent. Issues like immigration, tax cuts, gay rights, etc. DO NOT EXIST in Vatican City. There aren't hot button topics. Even if there were, the ultimate authority of the pope would mean that the issue would be resolved without controversy.

How the Vatican City compares to Switzerland:

1)The very fact that "harsh criticism" exists within the Swiss government indicates at least some degree of stability. The fact that someone was "ousted from parliament" also indicates that there is political discontent within the Swiss government. The Vatican City does not have any of this political discontent. Without political discontent, there is no political instability

2)There are a variety of political ideologies within the Swiss populace. This means that citizens within the Swiss government will always disagree with certain politicians or policies. There will always be citizens who want change or want to dramatically alter the course of government. Vatican City is 100% homogenous with regard to political ideology. Every citizen of the Vatican City is not only Catholic but an extremely devote Catholic and thus has political ideology in line with Catholicism. The fact that everyone in Vatican City has the same ideology means that political instability is virtually impossible.

A final note: I do not consider myself to be Catholic and the theological legitimacy of the papacy or the Church or Christianity in general have no effect on my argument.

Does all the money Switzerland took from the fascists that was stolen from German Jews help the stability? Or all the ill gotten gains of countless dictators, and rich US/European CEO criminals? Sounds like it helps the 'free' 'progressive' nation of Switzerland a lot...
