This is my introduction to the world of Debate.org - I thank you for the opportunity to host this topic. I accept the terms of the debate, along with my position as the Con in refuting that "racial profiling is necessary."

I am new to the forum, so please do grant a little leniency with my opening remarks as (to my understanding) this round will be nothing more than the mere formalities of us acknowledging our stances on the topic.

Since your Rd 1 wasn't established with any contentions, I will yield to the second round to begin my argument.

Again, thank you - and good luck. I hope this will be a healthy debate in which (whomever is deemed victor) we both come to share information to which we gain knowledge from each other.

Respectfully,
BJ Myers

we live in a world where there are all kinds of people, be it black white or beige. so the position that i am advocating is that we profile people based on the race. now this is for 2 simple reasons.

onto my first first argument

Generally speaking, it does not " that is, not in the sense of a phenomenon widespread enough to warrant continual media attention. In reality, there are only two kinds of profiling: good profiling and bad profiling. Let's discuss the difference.

Profiling is simply a method by which law enforcement can determine the probability that an individual has committed a crime or has criminal intent. Now, when making this assessment, many different factors are considered. Some have to do with age, sex, dress, behavior, the car being driven, whether or not a person is "out of place" (e.g., a well-dressed fellow in a BMW cruising a drug-plagued neighborhood), and, yes, some have to do with race. But whatever the criteria, good profiling chooses them in accordance with sound criminological science. And as soon as we subordinate that standard to anything, such as political or social concerns, we have rendered it bad profiling.

my second argument is that it is not really immoral.
we have come across numerous police practices which have been employed. do we not often comply with them just for the betterment of society? that is what this is essentially another tool that can be utilized by the police but in the long run it is for the people. and often there are many exemplary cases in which racial profiling has borne proof and saving many lives that would have otherwise been compromised.

this brings us to the concept of compromise and utilitarianism. we are doing it for the benifit of many oveer the few we are making sure provided that you are not a criminal, you will sleep at peace at night and racial profiling can help us to do so why should we not use it. the question that then begs to be asked is are we not being immoral by not using an available tool to provide a safer society?

so before concluding let me take an example of racial profiling that is being done. yes lets face it. its against Muslims. there is a reason why these Muslims have been targeted there is a pattern in the activities that have been noticed by the Muslims that live in the middle east and visit western nations and this was clearly proven in the 9/11 attacks aftermath where extensive research has been carried out.Terrorists have managed to get around our security measures before. The 9/11 terrorists were undetected going through metal detectors. When security was tightened, Richard Reid managed to board a flight with explosives hidden in his shoes. When passengers were asked to take off their shoes going through security, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab managed to board a flight with plastic explosives hidden in his underwear. This proves that terrorists are managing to find ways around new security measures, whenever they are introduced. Ethnic profiling is morally justifiable because other security measures have failed and we need to use whatever tactics we can to prevent terrorism.

im sorry about the lack of content in this round i am at school when i saw trhat i only have 30 mins left . i wish the opp speaker good luck and hope for a good debate

Max.Wallace. 3 points to Pro (arguments). Reason for removal: failure to explain why Pro had better arguments.

Reasons for voting decision: They both quit so conduct is a tie.

Racial profiling like clothing profiling is a legitimate police tactic when pursuing a suspect. It is never legitimate just to stop a fella because of race when no crime is being pursued. The person being profiled because a crime was committed should not blame the police, but blame the fella of his race that perpetrated the crime.
