Round 1 is for acceptance. New arguments can be introduced in rounds 2 and 3. Round 4 is reserved for rebuttals, extension of arguments and a final wrapping up.

I would like to thank my opponent in advance and look forward to a engaging, civilized debate.

I accept this debate, as for Catalonia to become independent of Spain would be a betrayal of Catalonia's cultural and historical heritage as well as an impoverishment of her culture.

Well, I might as well outline the general direction my argument would likely take.

1.) There is no historical basis to consider Catalonia an independent Nation (Barcelona was a semi-independent county for a short while at one point but always under heavy influence from both France and Spain, never the whole of Catalonia, however, and never an independent country).

2.) The economic reasons cited by nationalists are spurrious at best, and independence would likely be disasterous for the Catalonian economy.

3.) Independence would culturally and politically harm Catalonia, as it would continue down the path of denying much of its cultural heritage where it is shared with the rest of Spain and Catalonia would automatically be outside of the EU and NATO.

Other than that I would probably spend time rebutting statements by my opponent and celebrating the richness of Spanish culture, both Catalan and otherwise.

Could you perhaps post this in the actual debate so I can address it?

- Catalonia has own history, cultural identity

- Catalonia has to contribute 17 billion euros to Spain annually

- Catalonia contributes almost 20% of the federal government"s tax revenue but only receives 14% of federal spending

- Catalonia is an autonomous community, thus has its own government

- There is unequal partnership between Spain and catalonia as spain taxes them more than any other areas and uses that money for madrid

- The demands from spain has left catalonia in debt and left an originally wealthy country struggling

- 57% of Catalans voted for independence; in a nutshell, it would be undemocratic for them not to exercise their right to self-determination.

- Catalonia wants to gain the upper hand in pending renegotiations of its fiscal pact with madrid. The goal is to gain full control of its fiscal affairs, from tax collection to public expenditure.

- Spain is hanging onto Catalonia

- Catalonia should have a referendum for independence

- Madrid doesn"t even offer the fiscal autonomy enjoyed by the basque country

- Smaller states are better. The movement toward free trade agreements and globalization during the past 60 years has enormously reduced the economic advantages of having a larger domestic market to sell goods ands services. Small countries can sell their goods to other countries, both large and small, almost as easily as large countries can sell in their own domestic markets. For example, during the past 30 years the small country of Chile has had the fastest growing economy of Latin America, larger than Brazil and Mexico, the two largest nations of this region. This would not have been possible without the access of Chilean companies to markets in other countries, both in South America and elsewhere. As a result, Chile now exports around 40% of its GDP, compared to a ratio of exports to GDP in the United States of about 13%.
