Technology makes things easier but is not necessary
we can live without it
it may help us with information and cooking but there was a time when we didnt have all of that and people it was just fine.

Technology is a broad concept that deals with the usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects the ability to control and adapt to the environment. Technology is what separates us from apes and other animals. Without Technology, we would be living far worse off than we were living even before the Industrial Revolution.

Technology is what separates man from animals. We do not have any tools, besides our fists, that we do not use technology for to survive. Without technology of some sort, be it tools, shelter building, or other means of survival, the vast majority of us would certainly die.

Poverty eh?
Getting about naked (with various naked females) probably somewhere in the tropics, probably not far from the sea or a lake,
not too far from fruit and vegetables, not too far from fresh water, probably sustainably, completely as one with nature.
It might be tough, but it would be the reality most survivor's would face ;-)

Fortunately, happiness doesn't lie with material possessions.

Maybe its my affinity for history, throughout most of which humans lived in what we would consider unimaginable poverty, that makes the prospect less seem less threatening to me. I take nothing for granted, or at least try to.

Given the proper knowledge, many of the most critical technologies we possess could be reproduced in a relatively short time.

Would you really want to survive? You'd be living in unimaginible poverty.

If technology disappeared, I would want to position myself such that I could immediately begin to replace it ;) I think I'll go to the library and pick up some survival literature...

I didn't say other than the apes, we would be on their level or lower.

You're quite right, most of us who survived would be worse off than the other apes.
The point is, we can survive.

If technology was all going to disappear, I think I'd position myself in between some orchards and some market gardens. Preferably nice sustainable organic ones ;-)

Cheers

I fail to see how something being a necessity in every case renders the word meaningless... The word applies to things you need. The word applies to things I need. It is a necessity that there be enough food to supply me as well as everyone else. If it is true in my case, then it is true in every case. Therefore, agricultural technologies at least are a necessity.

Would "we" really survive? By "We" I mean what "we" define now as "we". I'd argue no. We'd be no better off, or somewhat worse off than apes.

The word "necessity" is rendered meaningless if it applies to all cases.
The fact is some people would survive were technology removed, just as non-tool-using monkeys survive.
If "we" can survive, technology cannot be considered a necessity.

People die for a variety of reasons. What's your point?
