Hello Everyone this is my first debate this debate will be about Tekken vs Street Fighter, in this debate I will be on the side of Tekken, and we will be talking about the characters, story, and comparing the games mecanics.
Rules:
1.No swearing/offensive language
2:No Spinoffs ( Marvel vs Capcom, Namco X Capcom)
3: The first round will be acceptance and a brief summary of your reasons, the second round will be to expand on your points, with your reasoning, the third round will be addressing the points made by the other, and the forth round will be a paragraph or two summarising why you think you won

OK so i beleive that Tekken is better than street fighter due to

Much more interesting story

i accept

i feel street fighter is better as though the controls are complex i feel the charecters and the world created from it are for the most part are more iconic and will stand the test of time more than any other arcade style fighting game the only other challenger really being mortal kombat

Characters
OK I will start by talking about the characters, i feel in my opinion the characters in Tekken are better than in street fighter, in terms of their fighting styles and just in general i believe their alot cooler. Admittedly Ryu and Ken are more memorable than any character in Tekken, however not only does Tekken boast a far larger character roster than Street Fighter, but unlike with street fighter and even mortal kombat, Tekken doesn't have a multitude of characters that are almost identical, for example Ryu, Ken and Dan have almost the exact same move set, and also in my opinion street fighter characters are alot less interesting and are mostly bland fighters with very little backstory. Also in Tekken all characters are very unique in terms of their fighting style as well as there story's which in my opinion is why Tekken has the superior characters
Story
Like i mentioned above i believe in terms of their characters, back stories as well as how the games story as a whole connects all the characters together alot better than with street fighter, while also having its funny moments to go along with its more serious moments, for example in tekken 5 when heihachi ties kazuya, jin and his father to a rocket and blasts them to space was very funny in my opinion, but it also has its more serious moments like kuzuyas revenge in tekken 1, or when kazuya gets thrown into the volcano in tekken 3, in street fighter alot of the story is repeated, such as Ryu's quest to become the greatest fighter in the world, Sagats quest to beat ryu, it shows a lack of creativity IMO for the story of street fighter.
Gameplay
Finally I will be talking about the most important part of any fighting game which is the gameplay. Now Tekken and Street Fighter are very different in this aspect, with street Fighter is a 2d fighter relying on the analogue stick to use special moves, while Tekken is a 3d fighter which relys on certain button combinations in order to do a certain move, similar to another PS1 game WWF Attitude. I feel that in terms of gameplay Tekken triumphs over street fighter, and here's why. While i have no problem with 2d fighters, there is more options and more freedom with your actions with a 3D fighting game, for example if jin comes at you and attacks do you attempt to block it or do you side step and counter attack. Another issue i have with the gameplay in street fighter is the blocking, with Tekken to block you don't press anything to block high attacks, and you hold the down button on the d pad to block low attacks, which is quite simple, however with Street Fighter you have to hold back, which is one of the more annoying things in a fighting game, not because it is hard to do, but its just over completed and it slows the game down. Also with Tekken its what i like to call easy to learn hard to master. This is because to do a simple move you would press one single button, then you would get more advanced moves which would require the use of 2 or 3 buttons, and then there's the ultimate test of skill for a Tekken player, which is the ability to hit the ten hit combos, which are extremely difficult and take alot of practice to get right. With Street fighter the fighters don't have as large a move set and with most characters they would have 3 special moves as well as a hyper combo, compared to the tens of different combos each fighter has in tekken.

So in conclusion i feel Tekken is better than street fighter, because of better characters, a larger more detailed story and better gameplay

though i agree character development is far greater in tekken, but lets not forget street fighter was designed as an arcade game where due to data limitations of the time ment very simple back stories were in order as the game didnt have the capability to go into details on why those characters are doing those things, now this reason also covers why some of the characters are so similar not through lack of creativity but a lack of resourses of the time and i feel if the first tekken game was made around the same time as street fighter then i feel tekken would fall victim to the limitations of the time,

now onto game play, yes the game play is smoother in the tekken series making it more friendly to casual players but you dont get the satisfaction when youv got all these combos learnt and your kicking some serious butt, also some charecter do have very detailed back stories though its never really gone over in the first games but some of the later games offers charecter bios, showing these great back stories.

a few quick things i feel sets street fighter above tekken is the fact that street fighter does not take itself to seriously its made jokes about itself it has a great art style and gave us some of gamings most iconic characters

my final point is this, street fighter is arguable the most important fighting game ever as its success, its style its almost everything set course for most fighting games to come and influenced the likes of tekken, mortal kombat, even smash brothers and for that reason street fighter is better than tekken in my opinion

Ok so this respond will be purely about responding to the others comments on this subject.
OK so you said that street fighter was designed as an arcade game and that due to the data limitations of the time it prevented them from giving very elaborate back stories, that however i think is wrong as the back stories of mortal kombat was far better in terms of depth and in terms of quality, for example scorpion was a proud ninja and was part of a rival clan with sub zero then sub zero kills his clan, so then he killed sub zero, then a new sub zero went to the tournament and killed scorpion, and banished him to the neitherrealm. This I believe is far better than Ryu's typical search story. You also stated that data limitation was the reason for some of the characters being the same, but that also is false as Dan and sakura two characters with identical move sets to Ryu and Ken weren't put into a street fighter game until Street fighter Alpha 2 which was released on the PS1 in late 1996, a year after the original tekken came out, with its superior game development and around 9 months before the improved Tekken 2 came out. So data limitations cannot be a reason for the characters being the same IMO, as well as the fact Sakuras backstory is the typical obsessed fan learns their masters moves, which is another clique story from Street Fighter.
Gameplay
Now to talk about your gameplay argument, I would respectfully disagree with your statement that street fighters controls are most satisfying to learn, however i would like to disagree, although both games have fantastic control schemes, Tekken has the 10 button combos, which are harder to learn than any move in Street Fighter. As well as that Tekken has a larger amount of moves to learn, so to be fair i will link a list of combos for the first game alone for Lei.

Plus some Street Fighter characters like zangief (i hope i spelt that right) has alot of his moves require moving the analogue stick up in order to execute, then when i do that he jumps which is especially frustrating.

You then bring up that street fighter doesn't set itself seriously when making jokes, you can also say that about Tekken, like i said before all the funny bonus endings in Tekken the weird storylines involving certain characters, like law and Paul and their money making schemes which always bites them in the end.I will agree that street fighter characters like Ryu, Ken, Bison and my favourite character in Street Fighter Sagat. You can also make the case that Tekken characters haven't been around long enough to be considered an iconic part of the gaming industry.

With your final point that Street Fighter is the most important fighting game ever, i would 100% agree in terms of fighting games yes, but i believe that although that is the case, that doesn't automatically make it the best, things are created they will be improved upon in one way of another, for example doom was one of the first FPS games, and the most important but IMO it was surpassed by Goldeneye, Mario one of the first 2D Platformers, and IMO the most important video game ever, i feel was surpassed by sonic, Alex Kidd (CONTROVERSY) and even some of the N64 platformers. So my point is although you say Street Fighter is the most important, fair enough i agree with you on that i feel Tekken, Mortal Kombat and even King of Fighters has surpassed it. I would like to thank my opponent for accepting and look forward to what he/she has to say about the points i made in round 2.

ok so i thought i won this debate because i though i expressed my points well (as did my opponent) but i also feel i counted his/her points alot better than he/she did mine and with alot more detail than with them. Well thats about it, as well as this there were alot of inconsistanes and i felt i highlighted why i though tekken was better as opposed to how street fighter was better from my opponent

Reasons for voting decision: Conduct for the forfeits. Arguments for Con's failure to respond to Pro's case--multiple forfeits almost always result in lost argument points, just because the forfeiter fails to respond to their opponent's case. As always, happy to clarify this RFD.
