Term limits are absolutely neccesary to maintain the citizens' rolls in our Republic. Why should anyone be against term limits?

Term limits are actually something we dont need in this society. If somebody likes their president enough and keep voting him into office, why should it matter if he gets voted in 6 times?

Term limits are absolutely necessary. If politicians are able to run for reelection as many times as they wish, they will (mostly) do things to get reelected. You've seen it, politicians fence riding because they are afraid of not getting reelected!

It doesn't matter, the people obviously like their leader, and want to keep electing him, so whats the big deal. People of the time period loved FDR thats why they kept electing him. Whats the difference.

You may not see term limits as necessary now, but if our leaders begin to censor free speech and hide things more so than they are now, how are the people to know whats true and whats not. FDR did not violate term limits, they were put in place after he served his terms.

Independentprogressive,
You are not technically giving any valid points on why term limits are wrong. Whether or not term limits are in place, leaders are still going to lie and hide things, so you have no argument, therefore your argument is void.

I don't believe either of you made any valid points, and so I will vote on how I would have debated- Pro. Term limits prevent leaders from monopolizing power and establishing pseudo-democratic empires like that of Cuba. When FDR served his terms, people asked for limits and thus they were imposed. Even in liberal/leftist nations like Venezuela term limits are upheld.

I would support term limits for Exutive branches but not for Congressional branches. The Executive branch involves a large consolidation of power, and a term limit serves as a check against the prolonged misuse of that power. But throwing out experienced congressmen only serves to dumb down the legislative branch, especially as the ins and outs and networking of congressional negotiations take a large amount of time to develop the right skills and overall serve for the better of the country.

FDR did not violating term limits. There were no term limits when FDR was running. It was because of FDR successfully winning the presidency 4 times that "moved" the opposition congress to install term limits.
I have no strong position on term limits but to address what's mentioned here. If politicians will do anything to get re-elected, won't their opponents also do whatever it takes to get elected? Furthermore, if whatever they do, gets them elected doesn't that mean that they are doing at least mostly what people want them to and isn't that a huge part of democracy?
I suppose the only reason I see for term limits is that the man in the office has great capacity for influencing events that a new start does not.

Term limits? Are you kidding? We the People determine the term limits every time we vote. By the way, FDR violated term limits and everybody looked the other way because it was the right thing for the country. Who cares? Hold up a sign with something important.
