If school children have more homework, we would not have enough time to play out in the fresh air. This could cause the obesity crisis to go up. Imagine, always doing homework instead of playing netball, or softball! All those colours on your laptop can effect your eyes.

Too much homework equals not enough exercise.

Thank you for the debate. I believe children should have more homework.

==My Stance==

We should be giving more homework than we currently are. However, too much homework is worse than no homework.

==Rebuttals==

My opponent argues that too much homework=not enough exercise. This is a straw man argument. My opponent has not brought up his case and the fact that there is a wonderful class called "Gym."

==PRO's case==

I believe that homework is very important for children and for teenagers alike. I am a public school studen and I know for a fact that I (I cannot speak for everyone) do not have a ton of homework as my opponent wants it to seem. In fact, I hardly have any.

What Child Development Research Shows

Researchers have found that children do have a unique brain strucutre that will determine how they are able to solve problems. Scientist Jean Piaget found that children must be able to add new knowledge to old knowledge. This acts kind of like a building block. Homework is a good way to do this.

Corrolation between homework and test scores

In addition, we also know that homework does improve test scores and performances. A set of three studies compared the following three factors: (1) Homework v. No homework; (2) How much homework is given; and (3) Homework v. In-class assignments that resemble homework.

The study, of course, favoured the homework.

i agree with pro, Con's main argument is that without homework, kids won't have time to play outside. Well, a lot of kids today don't go outside for free time, there busy playing video games, or wasting they're time on this site like me

Assigning and regulating homework has too much freedom to the teachers. You have to recognize the learning strengths of some students, which can come in many ways. Teachers should recognize different learning strategies for being able to teach a student properly. A student SHOULD be doing as much homework (or work), so they are able to recite the information earlier. Some students don't even need to do the homework to complete the curriculum with a successful mark, this is being said with experience, yet useless (more or less) work is being forced upon.

Students only have to take gym in one semester, and they can op out of it! No wonder the teenagers are obese.

What is homework? Does it really have any relevance to school at all? Does school even "count" towards anything anymore, if you think about it is a certain amount of time in your early life where you are exposed to people attempting to teach you "skills" that you will need it the "real world", but what does that matter? Through out life you will learn one way or another, consciously or not, whatever you situation is you are always adapting, thus learning how to cope with new situations. Even if you work a mindless job doing repetitive task over and over, you still learn, so if school is just an attempt to help you "learn", then way even have it at all?

I'm considering running a model of forcing kids to eat government-approved, healthy meals to stop them getting obese, while increasing homework to create a generation of super-smart kids, alongside parental education courses to encourage parents to limit their kid's laptop usage and buy eye-friendly laptops. I'm only scared you Australians might actually DO that (as a Kiwi I have that impression of Australia).
